Ohio State transfer granted release, will visit Kentucky

492746 Jayme Thompson

The football news wasn’t all bad today. As first reported by Justin Rowland and later confirmed by 247 Sports’ Josh Edwards, Ohio State redshirt freshman safety Jayme Thompson has been granted his release from the Buckeyes and will visit Kentucky for the Spring Game on April 26.

Thompson, 6’2″, 185 lbs., was considered the 12th best safety in the 2013 class by 247 Sports Composite, and picked Ohio State over Louisville, Missouri, Vandy, Michigan, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, and others. He’ll likely have to sit out a year, but if he picks the Cats, that’s huge news for an area that still needs help.

He is also looking at Missouri, Syracuse, Loserville, Penn St.,also West Virginia where he had commtted first before attending Ohio State. Coach Stoops needs to roll out the red carpet for this 4 star player.

It won’t be immediate help if he has to sit out a year

Sorry, it was right there….still would be a great get for the future of the position.

Committed to West Virginia. Decommitted from West Virgina. Committed to Ohio State. Broke his ankle in fall camp and red shirted.Transferring from Ohio State.

If he can’t crack the starting line up at Ohio State, we’ll take him.

If he was a redshirt last season, wouldn’t he be able to play this season regardless of the transfer?

Transfer is a transfer, redshirt or not. A soon as a player signs his LOI, the transfer rules take effect. Even if he signs his LOI in February and decides to transfer in March never having set foot on campus, he still has to set out a year if he transfers to another D1 school, except for NCAA hardship waiver (which is clearly not the case here) or graduation occurs with eligibility left and that school doesn’t have the graduate program the player wants (think Russell Wilson to Wisconsin).

FWIW, I read on the OSU Rivals site that he could petition and possibly not have to sit out:

“The option also exists for Thompson to apply for a waiver to play immediately given the timing of the transfer”
