No. 2 Male hosts No. 5 Covington Catholic in possible State-Semifinal Preview

#5 Covington Catholic (22-4) at #2 Male (23-4)

Saturday, February 15 at 6:00 p.m.

Covington Catholic travels to Male High School on Saturday in what could be the first of two games played between the two schools. The Colonels and Bulldogs may very well meet again on March 21 at Rupp Arena in the Boys’ Sweet Sixteen semifinals.

Male, who has only lost twice against in-state competition, has been rolling ever since Illinois State commit Howard Fleming returned to the lineup on January 17. Fleming, Tyren Moore, Cameron Pope, and Kaleb Glenn are all averaging double digits. Moore is a Mr. Basketball candidate and Glenn may be the best player in the state’s loaded 2023 class. Male is 6th in the state in field goal percentage and 12th in rebounding.

Covington Catholic lost to Lexington Catholic 59-58 in their first game of the year, but the Colonels have not dropped a game against in-state competition since. The Colonels’ double-digit scorers are seniors Grant Disken and Neil Green, and junior Donovan Stocks. Covington Catholic is 2nd in the state in defense (ranked by points allowed), 2nd in margin of victory, and 3rd in field-goal percentage.

Earlier this season, Covington Catholic beat an opponent 87-19 and Male beat an opponent by a score of 84-19! If you are in the Louisville area, come out to see some great high school basketball!

Don’t see either making it to the state tournament. I think Ballard wins the 7th region and Highlands takes the 9th.
