New footage from brawl at Pike County middle school game

Screen Shot 2016-01-12 at 10.36.05 PM

New footage has surfaced from last week’s brawl at a middle school basketball game in Pike County. EKB News obtained the footage from the Pike County School District through an open records request, and what it found shows a much more detailed version of the melee.

According to EKB, one of the lead instigators in the whole thing is an elected county official, Magistrate Bobby Varney. Varney is the father of the two Belfrey Middle coaches, who are also two of the leading roles in the new video. One of them went for the takedown of a referee after the referee attempted to land a kick on their father’s head. That referee had just been pulled to the ground by the elder Varney.

Watch it all, with much better commentary than mine, in this report from EKB News:

EKB NEWS EXCLUSIVE: New video footage has surfaced of the brawl at a middle school basketball game in Pike County last week, and it appears to shed some light on what may have led to the fight. It also appears to show the role a county elected official may have had in the incident. Early Tuesday afternoon, the Pike County School District honored an open records request filed by EKB News for video footage taken at the game. Until now, only cell phone video footage showing portions of the incident has been broadcast. The new footage obtained by EKB News shows the fight in its entirety, as well as the roles played in the incident by several people, including a Pike County magistrate. Pike County Board of Education Attorney Neal Smith told EKB News Tuesday afternoon that disciplinary action is forthcoming against those involved in the fight, but he declined to name exactly who would be subject to disciplinary measures. He said the video shows numerous people, mostly adults, displaying behavior that will not be tolerated at events sanctioned by the school district. We’ll continue to bring you updates on this developing story as more details emerge.  EKB News Reporter Chris Anderson has been following this situation, and he has this report.

It’s a damn shame that you can’t take your kids anywhere anymore & feel safe in doing it.

1:05 into the video: I am crying at how excited that lady in the bottom right corner gets at the fight starting– 50-60 year old woman flailing her arms in excitement. Gotta love Appalachia.

I think Bobby Varney needs to hold a clinic with the UK football team on how to tackle. Great form coach.

I am from Eastern Kentucky and when I was growing up there were fights at almost every game. Ninety nine percent was in the stands or outside after the game though. I was at Betsy Layne High School one night and the fight started on the upper level and ended up on the floor with one guy chasing another guy with a knife. You also would get word that one group of guys from Wheelwright and another from Mud Creek were going to fight at the game and you would get all excited about the game and the fight.

The early catalyst appears to be the fat white guy in the white hoodie, who was sitting on the opposite (near) sideline. Just follow him. He’s quick to involve himself, and when he does, all hell breaks loose. He’s looking for someone to punch in the face, and he gets his opportunity. Then he returns to his seat!

    I hope he’s arrested.

The Pikeville/Warfield incident during the 1971 regional tournament was much better.

Officiating is so horrible that the Pike county Board or the KHSAA should be liable. Its a shame that things are allowed to escalate to the point that these things happen. Just watch any middleschool or high school boys or girls game and you will see how bad it is there are a few that do a good job, but in general is brothers cousins friends of what ever coach is hosting and its just plan unprofessional
