NCAA punishes Kentucky Soccer players for pickup game with Foo Fighters

Remember when the Foo Fighters played Rupp Arena back in May and rode bikes around downtown Lexington? Apparently, they also played a pickup soccer game with some UK Soccer players and coaches, which the school had to report to the NCAA because it’s a violation.

According to The Courier-Journal’s Jon Hale, several UK soccer players will have to sit out two supervised team activities (practices or meetings) because the Foo Fighters crashed their pickup game before their concert at Rupp. Apparently, the band was tired and wanted to get the adrenaline flowing, so they challenged the UK players and coaches to a game; because that game took place the week before finals and coaches participated, it violated an an NCAA rule and the school had to report it.

Leave it to the NCAA to suck the fun out of everything. Thankfully, the punishment wasn’t Everlong.

Sorry the soccer players are getting tagged for this but I appreciate their sacrifice. Evidently it worked because the Foo Fighters put on an excellent 3 hour show in Rupp !!

i get rules like this are in place for a reason. but come on. there has GOT to be some common sense involved when handing down punishments like this.

Exactly. I’d gladly take the memory of playing pickup with the Foo Fighters over yelling them “Sorry guys. That’s a violation. Can’t do it.”

Have we come to expect anything different from the NCAA? Probably would have been o.k. if it were part of a fake class.

Maybe a fake class and buying some jewlery or taking money from an agent would have been ok.

I guess the Foo Fighters drive clicks, but the violation was the players and coaches participating in a pick-up game together. The coaches should’ve known better. I’m guessing the next two team meetings will be quite brief.

There are so many minor infractions reported by every school some of the things are hard to keep up with. Also, if you were a coach and celebrities approached you to join in a game, your fist thought isn’t going through the NCAA rule book, especially since guys like Peyton Manning were known to practice with college students during the offseason.

Higher universities like UNC must be better at teaching those consequence avoidance classes. All we have to do is add extra fake students to those classes and then they aren’t a benefit just for athletics. They are a benefit for everyone. The NCAA doesn’t really care about everyone, just that the athletes don’t get special treatment.

That’s like no punishment at all. Schedule two new team meetings to discuss paper usage and problem solved.

Then you can tell the ncaa that you were even more strict than they suggested. You made the whole team and coaching staff miss those two team meetings.

If we lose the next game I’m going to blow a gasket… this is minuscule and insignificant yet missing training sessions can be a much bigger deal than advertised

I’m sorry but this is absolutely ridiculous on the NCAA’s part. Let the kids have fun. A damn game with the Foo Fighters, please!!! Should have been on absolutely no concern to them…

Two things. I wonder if Carolina’s players would be sanctioned ed for this. And, just how incredibly STUPID are the half-wits at the NCAA?

Man, the punishment was worth it, right? Pick up game with the Foo Fighters?! Epic! I’d do that in a heartbeat!
