The favorite for the 145th run for the roses has been scratched.
Trainer Richard Mandella announced Omaha Beach will not race in the 2019 Kentucky Derby. While suffering from a mild cough, a scope revealed Omaha Breach had an entrapped epiglottis, forcing the horse to be sidelined for Saturday’s race.
Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith is now without a mount. He previously rode Roadster in the Santa Anita Derby.
In Omaha Beach’s absence, Bob Baffert’s Game Winner will likely become the Derby favorite. With rain in the forecast, Omaha Beach was one of the few horses with a prep race win on an offtrack. The betting money will now shift to By My Standards, the long shot owned by Drew Franklin’s family friend, who won the Louisiana Derby in tumultuous conditions.
Omaha Beach will likely be replaced by Bodexpress, the also eligible who finished second in the Florida Derby. Updated odds for Kentucky Derby 145 have three Baffert horses leading the way.
