One of Mark Stoops’ final remaining football recruiting targets in the 2019 class grew up six hours away from Lexington, but has a unique connection to the University of Kentucky.
MJ Devonshire made the trek to Lexington last weekend for an official visit. In the Rupp Arena stands for the Cats’ victory over Kansas, the four-star cornerback got the chance to meet John Calipari after the game. It’s not the first, nor will it be the last time Coach Cal poses for a photo with one of Stoops’ most prized recruits, however, this time Calipari was much more familiar with the football family.

Calipari grew up in Moon Township, Pennsylvania, about 20 minutes south of Devonshire’s hometown of Aliquippa. In the mid-70s Calipari played high school basketball with MJ’s uncle, his mother’s brother.
Since Calipari’s reunion with Devonshire’s mother, Stoops has been to Pennsylvania to visit MJ and his family. Their connection to Calipari will not be what seals the deal for Kentucky, but one week away from National Signing Day sources close to the program like where UK stands with the four-star cornerback.
