Good news for all you Mitch Barnhart fans out there!

The University of Kentucky’s athletic director has a new deal that will keep him in place through June 30, 2022. The new deal, posted on today, bumps Barnhart’s salary from $730,000 to $840,000 beginning in 2019; that number will go up to $880,000 in 2020 and then $925,000 in 2021.

The fleecing of a community and rewarding of gross incompetence.

The UK’s methodology under Barnhart… “throw more money at it.”

Based on this decision you can see who’s embedded themselves in the brickwork.

Thanks for all the championship Mitch! I hear stoops is on track to win 4 games this year so can we extend him while we’re at it?

Where do they find all of this money? Mitch has made one good hire in all his years at UK (Calipari), he failed the first time when he hired Gilispie and was later forced to hire a good coach!

UK athletics has plenty of money so that is where it comes from. ESPN deal just insured there will be plenty of money. Now let’s break down Mitch’s hires:
Basketball- extended Tubby (who left), hired Billy G (who got Fired) Hired Cal
I would give him a push on Tubby (not bad but not great)
Billy G- sucks Cal- success Overall 1 out 2 for hires (he extended Tubby as soon as he was hired as AD- so I think he is 50% on Men’s BB coaches

Football- I will call Joker a loss and Brooks a win (although I think he was average) and a question mark on Stoops
Overall 50% success with a one still to show us if he can do it ( I like stoops-just time to win)

Women’s basketball- Mitchell is a success but Moss got fired or had to leave. 50% on Women’s BB.

Baseball- Cohen good henderson average and a new coach.
50% with a new coach just starting.

Softball- schmidt wasn’t good and lawson is good.
      50% again.
With the main sports Mitch is 50% at best and if you look right now- baseball, women’s bb, and Football are all looking like they are on a downtrend. I will say he has made the ancillary sports very competitive. I won’t complain about what he has done to football fans since he has gotten her but coaching hires only- he doesn’t deserve a raise,

Golly Gee, just look at all the success of UK Football under Mitch !!!! Heck, he deserved more than that for last years outstanding performance by Stoopes Troops !! Man oh man, 5 wins !!! We were the SEC’s biggest threat !! And we witnessed such an awesome performance vs UL !!!

I wish my boss paid me so well for so little….

My only complaint with Mr. Barnhart is the failure to address the need for improved football facilities for so long. By, the investment has been made and hopefully it will pay dividends. He has certainly made great strides in the “minor” sports facilities and he has made good hires there. The Stoops hire was a good one. The Billy G hire was not. But, how many people really thought that was a mistake at the time? Most fans, if they are truthful, were enthused with that hire at the time. Joker didn’t work out but again most fans thought it was a good hire, including Coach Brooks. Criticism comes with the AD job. However, some comments are over the top.

The Stoops honeymoon is over. Like any coach, he deserved 3 years or so to bring in his own players and firmly establish his system. At some point, facilities upgrades, high intensity performance programs, “upgraded recruiting” (still not sure about this one), and rhetoric have to give way to more wins and bowl games. In UK’s case, reaching 6 wins in most seasons with the occasional 8 win season would likely elevate the FB coach to legendary status.

Having said all that, at this point in his tenure, how can you say Stoops was a good hire? Stoops is 12-24 overall and 4-20 in the SEC. 1 less win than Joker in his 3 years. Ok, so give him a pass on the first 3 years with the excuse that Joker left the cupboard bare.

But if Stoops does not win 6 games in year 4, with what some tout as 3 of the highest ranked recruiting classes ever at UK, then no, it is not a good hire. It’s smoke and mirrors. And the ineptitude displayed on the UK sidelines that many pass off as inexperience will prove to be incompetence instead.

Stoops was a good hire anyway you cut it. If he ends up winning he is a good coach. If he ends up losing, and getting fired he was still a good hire. Regardless of wins the cupboard is more full than when he took control. He has improved UK football in every aspect of the game except making it to a bowl game. But whoever the next coach is will have a much easier job than stoops had when he took over. And I guarantee the job is much more desirable now than it was when stoops took over.

How can a coach end up losing, assuming he is given ample time, and still be considered a good hire? LOL, because he loses less than other coaches? How has Stoops improved EVERY aspect of UK football? Facilities upgrades are not his doing. In fact, I remember both Brooks and Joker practically begging for facilities upgrades. Bet they wish a couple of these improvements were made 10 years ago. Regardless, they are not Stoops’ doing. The only aspect you could say has been upgraded has been recruiting. However, success in recruiting can only be judged when those recruits are turned into players that achieve more wins than losses. I couldn’t care less that we have improved in recruiting RANKINGS, which is all you can say at this point.

LOL, the next coach may have it easier when he takes over from Stoops, but not because of anything that Stoops has done. He may have it easier because SEC Media contract money allowed UK to add some bells and whistles. Thank Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Auburn, FL, UGA, UT for that I guess.

The job will only be more desirable because facilities upgrades were FINALLY made because Barnhart knew he was losing the fan base and support for the program if he didn’t show a little glitter. But again, that would have had to happen if they hired anybody.

Stoops MUST win 6 games this season. Period. Otherwise he has failed and no, it was not a good hire.

I heard that this is really just a “Memorandum of Understanding” – and will serve as Mr. Barnhart’s contract until he consults with his lawyers at Gillispie & Associates

Wildcat, I’m tossing a “horse shit” flag on you. Anyway you cut it is based on the record of the Head Coach during his tenure, NOT what you perceive as how he left the program or received the program. If Stoops and company are fired at the end of this season because they couldn’t make a bowl game, then they failed and they do not deserve anything less.

Now, I do think Stoops was a good hire but he needs to surround himself with experienced coach’s and great recruiters. Playing in the SEC is a cast iron bitch, no matter how you slice it, but also being at UK is another smack. We need to have better everything than anyone else to be able to hit the bowls, improve every year, get better recruits, and maybe, just maybe, win an SEC title. Do that, and everything will be fine.

Now back to the original, is it just me or does everyone think major college paychecks are getting really stupid? I know it’s all based on “what everyone is paying” but tell that to the family that is paying tuition for their kids that they have an outstanding basketball team. Good lord folks, something has to change, things cannot continue to expand like they are regardless of how many games we win.

Mitch has already lost a portion of the fan base as seen by the drastic cutting of football season ticket prices and decline in renewals. UK may lose to Southern Mississippi and then the fans are going to have to go through the nightmare of Mulligan Mitch picking another football coach.

Jaxson – Your on it. But there’s more.

Mitch doesn’t have the ability to scout talent. That’s why he hires people to do that for him. So we pay someone to do something they can’t even do (and have to pay even more for it to be subcontracted out). But this is just the beginning.

Once a short list is created with them ranked by the consultants being paid… Mitch lacks the ability to vet the list. So it’s a, “trust me” business deal every time.

Meanwhile the fans, the players, and the University get hosed with an amateur AD team leading the Athletics Department in the wrong direction.

Seriously, Mitch hired 2 head football coaches in a row with 0 wins(ever) as a head coach… as a strategy to be successful in the SEC. If Stoops doesn’t get it done Mitch is out.

I think its hilarious that you assume HOF football coaches are knocking down Mitch’s door to coach AT KENTUCKY. Heads up: we aren’t Alabama.

It’s UK. We HAVE to take a gamble on coaches and see if it plays out. Bill Belichick is not walking through that door.

Now, quit your whining, and let’s see how this all plays out. If it doesn’t work, we’ll get another coach.

STILL waiting for you to name a replacement coach. And while we’re at it, name the AD you have in mind, too.
