Mitch Barnhart, Chip Rupp discuss name changes to Rupp Arena, Lexington Center

Once the news of Rupp Arena at Central Bank Center was announced during a press conference in the Rupp Arena lobby I mean the Rupp Arena At Central Bank Center lobby, UK athletic director Mitch Barnhart commented on the partnership with Central Bank and the thought process behind Rupp Arena’s name change.

Chip Rupp, the grandson of Adolph Rupp, also gave his thoughts on the change.

Still wish they had an on-campus arena.

I do as well. I had no idea where Supp was the first time I ever went there, and when we found it,I was like where is it?
I truly didn’t believe we were at Rupp,it honestly was nothing like I thought. It looked like a bank,or part of a mall, and the area it was, it just seemed so weird.

No one is going to call it that. It’s Rupp. CrystalBall, it’s close enough to campus. Not like it’s miles away. And dan, that was pretty high class when it was built. If you haven’t been to Rupp lately, it’s going to look completely different pretty soon. They are making great progress.

My comment about on campus arena was not directed at distance from campus. To get a true “home court” advantage you need to practice on a daily basis in the venue, on the court, where you play your home games. Most schools do. UK does not practice in Rupp Arena. I realize an on campus arena will never be built. But I still wish Rupp would have been built on campus.
