Matt’s Journal: Why I Don’t “Stick to Sports”

It’s rare I get a night off without anything work-related to do and tonight is one of those great evenings. So of course, I felt the need to write a quick blog post and take my restless energy away from more leisurely pursuits (Raw, The Bachelor and my book “Confidence Men” weren’t holding my attention). Since our decision last summer to take our radio show to the GOP and Democratic National Convention, I have gotten more comments about the decision I have made to not “Stick to Sports” on KSR and Hey Kentucky. The question I usually get is some form of, “Matt, why would you want to alienate half our audience and talk about politics/current events when you could just talk about UK Sports?” It is a fair question and one that I think is worthy of an explanation. UK Athletics is a commonality that bonds the vast majority of this state (at least the sane non-UL citizens) and there are some who wonder why I would want to deviate from that topic to talk about anything else, especially something that is seen as so divisive as politics. This blog seems like as good a forum as any to explain my thinking and whether you agree or disagree, at least give my viewpoint:

1. KSR has Never really Stuck to Sports

A common theme around the question of whether I should stick to sports it the belief that somehow we are acting differently than we have in the past. This just isn’t the case. From Day One of KSR, other topics besides sports have been a major part of the site. From the earliest days of the blog, we have written about topics ranging from The Bachelor to Kentucky county reviews to ranking the women of Mayberry on the Andy Griffith Show (still Turkey Hunter’s best work). I started KSR not to become what it has become…the central place for UK fans to get news about the Cats. I started KSR as a place to create a sports community based upon one commonality (UK Sports) that becomes the starting point for broader entertainment. I used to write a nightly post that was nothing but my thoughts on life, about half of which were about UK and the other half about whatever else was on my mind. I was never interested in creating solely a “UK News” site. I wanted a UK Fan community site…and the blog and the radio show after were created to reflect that.

2. UK Athletics is still BY FAR the biggest thing we do on all KSR Forums

Sometimes I will see critics (usually on message boards) claim that “KSR doesn’t even talk sports any more.” That is insanity. The VAST majority of every show is still about UK, the games, the players, the coaches, etc. Except during the summer (when there is little to say about anything sports related), virtually every show begins with UK talk and certain of our programs (like the Post Game Show) are almost exclusively sports-centric. What often happens is that when other topics come on the radio (like politics, or fast food brackets or cantaloupes), people magnify their importance by exaggerating the amount of time we spend on them. With the exception of our shows hosting Debates, I can’t think of a show ever where more than one segment was ever spent on politics or current affairs. The reality is that I know those topics have limited shelf lives and thus we spend small amounts of time on them…just like the Grammys, wrestling, country music, tennis, Ryan’s wife fights, etc, they are things we touch on and then move on. The show moves quick, but the only thing that is continually brought up over and over….UK Athletics.

3. People Like When we don’t Stick to Sports

Which brings me to the main point…whether people realize it or not, I don’t stick to sports because the audience doesn’t like when I do. I am a numbers guy…I study all the metrics of radio, tv, blogs, viewership, listenership, readership, etc with intense detail. When it comes to marketing and studying audience behavior, I am the dorkiest of dorks. I know our audience…and here is the reality. The more we deviate from sports, the more our audience grows. That is the secret to KSR…people ask me all the time, “why is KSR so popular?” Well in part it is because of how huge the BBN is…but there have been a ton of UK radio shows over the years and there are many others now…why has KSR hit the mark? Because we don’t stick to sports. KSR is about our lives…period. IT isn’t just about UK Athletics…any idiot can talk about that and most can do it with more knowledge than I, Ryan or Shannon have. But KSR is about living the fan experience on the radio and opening up our lives to share them with you. If you listen to the show, you know me…maybe not as if we were really friends but what you hear on the air is pretty close to how I really am. The same is true of Ryan, Shannon, Drew, etc. We are authentic and as such, we talk about whatever is important to us…often it is UK sports. But it isn’t always. And the reality is that as we have increased our talk about non-UK topics, our ratings have increased.

In 2016, our highest rated radio shows in terms of ratings and online listeners showcased this variety. Our 5 highest weeks were those of the Katina Powell interview, the NCAA Tournament in Des Moines, the two political conventions we attended and the week of the election. Why were those the highest weeks? In my opinion, because they were the weeks where we were a part of some of the biggest stories in the state and country, either because we attended them, did the interviews or expressed our thoughts. It is that simple. All of you know that if you want sheer expertise on UK Sports, we aren’t the people for you. We are entertainers with a few inside connections and we find a way to present all the relevant UK news in “the most ridiculous manner possible.” But the reality is that to make the show as popular as it currently is, we have to extend it beyond the hardcore UK sports fan world…we have to get the casual fan, the college students, the grandmas, the folks who like to laugh. Leave the hardcore talk for everyone else…we are trying to reach a mass audience…and to do that, you have to get beyond the relative tedium of constant sports chatter.

Bottom line…individuals often dislike a particular topic we might discuss. But it is because we talk about all those topics that there are so many diverse individuals that listen. Nobody is going to like every topic…but we hope everyone can like some topic.

4. The Show is a Reflection of Me and I think variety is interesting and important

All of that brings me to my last point. I think KSR is an amazingly unique situation found almost nowhere else in the country. In the middle of a state with no top 50 metro areas and no professional sports team, a radio show gets record-setting ratings and is nationally relevant while sticking to no obvious sports formula. A show hosted by a (moderate) progressive is listened to by a (majority) conservative audience and both sides (for the most part) respect their differences. Breaking every supposed Radio demographic assumption, a “Sports” show can not only win the 25-54 male demo, but every relevant demo, including females, Seniors and kids. That simply doesn’t happen…but it happens on KSR. On the same television show in one 30 minute segment, the hosts can debate whether White Nationalists holding a rally at a state park, interview John Calipari’s wife and do a parody of “The Bachelor.” There is literally nowhere else in the country where those can all happen in the same place. The same radio show can in one week, debate a UK football win, host a Governor’s Debate, have the Sklar Brothers co-host, fight with Dan Dakich, have a Chester/Darryl debate, interview the UK Athletic Director and host a Fast Food Bracket. I know of no other show that does that, but we do.

At the end of the day, most people who complain about me not “sticking to sports” do so because they are very Conservative, care deeply about politics and don’t want to hear from a “stinkin’ liberal” they disagree with. I understand that. And I acknowledge that expressing my opinions on some issues (especially in the Trump era) may cause some of those folks to not want to listen. I wish that weren’t the case, but I know that it happens. However I believe that the vast majority of people want authenticity and to hear what people really think, even when they disagree. For many of those people, I can be their “one liberal friend”, a description I have been called many times on the road and one I am always appreciative of. I am who I am…a dork from Middlesboro who found his way to a lottery ticket of a life by being in the right place at the right time and getting to live his dream. From day one I have been determined to be my total authentic self on the air and not be fake no matter what. I don’t think my opinions are better than anyone else’s and I certainly don’t feel it is my job to “educate” my listeners on my opinions (liberal sportswriters who use this excuse do make me gag since many are significantly less informed than they believe). Instead, I just share them because like my opinions on topics as far ranging as Sturgill Simpson to tennis, my political views are just sometimes on my mind. But so are lots of other things as well. If you have listened to the show from the beginning, you have heard me really suck initially, laugh consistently, get impatient with callers, cry at listeners’ stories, complain about my bosses, make stupid jokes, be a mediocre Fish and Wildlife Spokesman, fight with Ryan, break up with a girlfriend, eulogize my Grandmother, consider running for Congress, apologize for dumb comments, challenge power, be a mama’s boy, get fired, make plans I never follow through with, celebrate wins, call for coaches’ jobs, create awkwardness, tease John Short and anything and everything in between. The show is me, warts and all…and that includes not “sticking to sports.”

With that, I have some wrestling to watch (April 11 Smackdown comes to Yum Center…see you there!)

It’s only February, but I think we have a contender for the “Most Ridiculous Comment of the Year” award. Cry me a freakin river.

Ever since election night, the sheer volume of crybabies worming out of the woodwork is staggering. There isn’t enough airtime on CNN to cover the public blabbering of these cupcakes.

I laugh at the continual drummed up crocodile tears and juvenile chants of the Elizabeth Warren disciples.

Expand America’s job base, strengthen the military, protect our borders and create fair trade agreements. Which of these do you liberals have a problem with?

If you can’t get on board, get out. Canada’s borders are open for business. I heard a lot of idle threats about celebrities moving out of the country leading up to the election, but unfortunately, like so many other liberal promises, they were all talk and no action.

    • DelrayCat

LOL…I laugh when you guys say liberals should “get out” if they don’t like something, and its funny how vigorously you defend the second amendment, but conveniently forget about the first.
As for your questions…I’ll bite. Expand the job base….all for it. What is the plan? Since Reagan we have seen our manufacturing base disappear completely, with both sides allowing it to happen. Unfettered capitalism is certainly the reason, but yet we do not address the problem. Maybe some protectionist policies will work. However, placing tariffs on specific countries will lead to costs being passed to consumers. Let’s face it, the multinational companies OWN all our politicians, and Trump is helpless to do anything without Congress and state legislatures doing their part. I do agree with many on the right this is the #1 problem facing this country. But you are fooling yourself if you think it is a border issue. The problem lies in employers paying these workers under the table or by not adequately checking (fake) documents. Stop the flow of money to the illegals and they will quit coming and leave on their own (or get in line). Besides, the vast majority fly here or simply overstay a visa; a wall is pointless and sends a bad message to our allies.
Strengthen the military?? Geez how much more do we need to mortgage this country to project power while continuing to kill tens of thousands of innocent women and children in our effort to “fight terror”. No wonder they all hate us over there. Just for a reminder, we invaded a country that didn’t attack us and by most estimates a million or more people were killed. Sure, not all by us…but we own it. Or at least Bush and Co. does. Plus, America Inc. already spends more than the next ten countries combined. How many more weapons, troops, bases and multi-million dollar planes that can’t fly do we need?

    • bdgdad
      8:10 am February 14, 2017 Permalink

DelrayCat, I agree with you that the people forget the first amendment and we need to listen and actually hear what both sides are saying. But to la that at the feet of one party is short sited. Colleges restrict speech more that any other group in America and they are far from right in their politics. I think the problem is our country is putting its hopes and dreams into a politician period. We should care fare more about our local elections and school board than national politics, but we have given all our power the federal level and it isn’t helping.
There is an issue with the border and it should be fixed and yes employers that hire illegals should be punished. It is two fold issue not an either or issue.
I agree military spending should be looked at. President Eisenhower’s parting word on the Military Industrial Complex are hauntingly relevant today. We spend so much because we protect most of the free world and you can see that in the NATO nations. They are getting nervous because Trump is stating that they are not pulling their share of the burden. Most have little to no standing Army and if we didn’t provide defense for them they would be taken by Russia or someone else.
As a final note, if they hate us why are they wanting in the country?

Honestly, if we can all come together to discuss sports, I don’t understand why we can’t all come together and at least calmly discuss the problems facing our state (and our country). My guess is most of us, if forced, could sit in a room and reach a compromise on almost every issue. I really think its our politicians that like us divided on politics. They think it makes their re-election easier. It really isn’t necessary for us to be this divided.

Divide and conquer is literally one of the oldest “tricks in the book”; the evidence clearly shows that the extreme left and right seem totally oblivious to what is being done to all of us. The divide will continue, we all lose and the 0.001% wins. Those people, our de facto masters- their only allegiance is to power and control.
I have no answer to thwart them. Obviously neither does anyone else. Awareness helps but it seems, ignorance is bliss.

It’s extremely immature, in my opinion, to tell people to, “Stop voicing your beliefs and stick to X.” Why are actors, artists, and sports analysts not qualified to voice their opinions on current events? How are any of the rest of us, whether we’re students, coal miners, Walmart cashiers, or businessmen, any more or less “qualified” than the people in the public light? If you think one side is absolutely and completely right on every single issue and the other side is absolutely and completely wrong on every single issue, then I’m sorry, but you’re ignorant. Neither side is inherently evil. Neither side is completely righteous. If you can only see black and white, you know nothing about the world.

With that said, President Orange is despicable and unfit. Mitch is a crook. Hillary is corrupt. Bernie Bros are the worst.

“Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”

Most of you do a piss poor job following the above principles and some how you center your political beliefs–or at least you say it’s what you center your political beliefs around, in reality it’s probably just a reason to feel better about yourselves–around what you have been told comes from the same book as those two sacrosanct commandments. The only parts you’ve actually read are what comes up in your 60 second google searches. The hypocrisy with the vast majority of the people who listen to the show and frequent the site is unreal.

Treat people decent. If someone has a different view listen to them. If you disagree, tell them why. If they disagree, listen to what they say. To think Matt, me, you, George Bush, Barack Obama, or John Calipari have to have the views and beliefs is so utterly and undeniably stupid.

Yeah I’m sure I’m waaaaaay off base! Titan of industry you are. Good luck with your women studies degree. Are you defending your dissertation for your doctorate this year or are you going to back pack through Europe on someone else’s dime?

??? Big board you aren’t very “gifted” are you? You clearly lack maturity, intelligence, and anything that remotely resembles a talent. While pride yourself on being an internet troll…you are incredibly terrible at that. Please go back to square one. Try some deep introspection. Find a purpose and really strive to achieve that goal. Right now you are just a sad and pathetic existence. Good luck little buddy.

Sorry little guy. I’m not a hopeless millennial slave to social media such as yourself. Regardless, You don’t remotely register on my list of importance. I’m just giving you a free life lesson. Don’t let your fictitious online persona suffer false delusions of grandeur and bite off more than you can chew in the real world. It might prove bad for your health. Now run along sport and go play hopscotch with the other little girls. You are welcome.

seriously, if you can’t up your game, I can’t continue to respond to you. I’ve been doing charity work thus far hoping some kind of entertainment would come forth. Now you just look sad and pathetic. You are driven and dedicated, but a quality troll you are NOT. I encourage you to reassess your entire troll existence and find a different path because you clearly lack the skills and intellect to pull it off.

You don’t owe an explanation. It’s your product. You package it, you market it, and you sell it. If someone wants to offer their formula, they can do the same if they’re willing to take the risk. You can be opinionated on politics, but so can I (we all). If you think you’re right all the time on any topic, you’ve got problems. My views aren’t yours and vice versa. Core beliefs won’t change regardless and we’re all only wiser for garnering the perspective of others. How many of us “non-opinionated”–“stick to sports” folks mute our own platform for sharing our perspective?

If KSR truly stuck to UK sports only, I would have no knowledge of the smash hit “Taste of Texas”. Also the striking image of Billy G. singing in Matt’s dream. If you don’t like topics like this on KSR, you maybe a huge UK fan, but you’re not much a fan of life.

Big Blue Nation, let me translate what poor Matt is trying to say:

    1) He will whine about Matt Bevin as often as possible.
    2) He will whine about Donald Trump as often as possible.
    3) He will whine about conservative Americans as often as possible.
    4) He will say glowing things about leftists like Barack Obama.
    5) He will say glowing things about leftists like Hillary Clinton.
    6) He will say glowing things about leftists in Hollywood.

Matt, I challenge you to write a single 100% positive article about Matt Bevin. Just one. Nothing negative. Just a positive article about our hard-working governor to show you’re not really a leftist.

If you can’t, I long for the day when a conservative/or centrist Kentuckian starts their own version of KSR and puts you out of business.

Matt will indeed continue to whine about Matt Bevin, but that’s because he knows he is the reason Bevin won both the primary and the general election. He was trailing in both before his KSR debate appearances, and then he moved into the lead both times.

Maybe that means Matt is secretly a Tea Partier who has gone undercover as a nutty left-winger?

I completely disagree with 33 – 50% of Matt’s political views and I really don’t give a sh!t when it comes to the show. There is nothing standing in the way of you, me or someone else starting a show. I have no desire to do so.
Good luck with your start-up. It’s the American dream. Go for it!

I’m fine with the format of the show and site. I’ve been reading the site longer than listening to the show. Both are fun and also informative about U.K. Sports. It’s a great balance.

As far as the political climate: the problem is the socialists in the Democratic Party and the racists in the Republican Party. I see Matt as a left leaning person who is rational. He did not like Hillary and said as much many times. But the extremists in each party are fighting each other hard. While most of us are just stuck in the middle with our opinions.

Great post. But Kentucky actually has two top 50 metro areas if you include Cincinnati/NKY. It’s the 28th biggest metro area in the country. And Louisville is #43. Also, Kentucky is 26th in population. It’s not as small as people think.

I admire anyone who comes up with an idea, builds that idea into a profitable business(capitalism, entrepreneurism) but then has the moxie(balls) to criticize the party who usually stands for those things.

Matt Jones and KSR have delivered perfection in UK sports. You cannot mire this perfection by dabbling in real life interests. This generation is spoiled by KSR, In the 1960’s I was driving deep into the country high on a hill top to pull in Cawood. I lived for that one UK article in the Kentucky Post once a week during basketball season. With the Cats Pause we got recruiting without paying for the individual services. With KSR we have Wildcat exposure magnified an infinite amount. It is comprehensive and it is free.
The extra content cannot hurt. If it does not appeal just ignore and just KSR Wildcat perfection is readily available in numerous formats. I find myself reading the non-Wildcat articles more and more. It is the humor from the Wildcat articles that makes me open to other written entertainment. Rarely I need to skim past subject matter I do not care for. It does not take away from the Sports that is there.
I like to only have to go to one place for everything. KSR is getting there. Wildcat topics I have to have. It is an improvement when you have human interest and big news stories also covered. I could exist on a diet of 100% Wildcat material. The more normal, casual fan needs a better balance. KSR’s popularity only helps their ability to cover what is most important.

Matt, I’m conservative & a consistent Republican voter and while I don’t listen every day I am less turned off by your stances than I am by the Sean Hannity’s of the radio/tv world. Of course, your show is labeled as a sports show but I think your description is a correct one. Also, I think you are fair to the other side more than some would give you credit for. For example, I live in FL I love that you had FL Senator Rubio on during the presidential primary campaign and you were fair with him. Keep up the good work.

You’ve got a good thing going – ALL of us helped get you where you are, ALL of us enjoy UK sports, but you’re right – not everyone likes where you’re going with the political leanings. You’ve got the market cornered right now, so you can put out half UK things and half other things. People who don’t lean left will read and listen to the part they want, and tune out the rest. They have to. But, go too far or minimize the UK aspect too much and someone else will step in, just as you did, and fill the gap. Then you will see your ratings fall, your listeners turn, and maybe then you will regret alienating the other
    side of the isle.
