Matt Elam is on his way to T-Town

Matt Elam is on his way to Tuscaloosa right now with his mother and sister for his official visit to the University of Alabama. Bo Davis, the Tide’s new defensive line coach, has to make up for lost time but Elam told Scout.com the two “clicked fast” yesterday in Elizabethtown. Earlier in the week Elam said he likes the hire.

Several of Alabama’s current 2014 commits will also be on campus this weekend. Elam is much closer to Kentucky’s class, but new relationships and friendships could be formed over the next few days.

It’s almost over.

If he were still to choose UK, i’d be very surprised. Its too late in the game to have so much interest
in Alabama. He mentions “clicking” with the new defensive coach, Mama and sister going on visit with him, and actually going through with the visit. read the excitement in his words when he says, “Bama, here I come!”. Sounds like a done deal to me. Hope i’m wrong.

If (When) he commits to Alabama, can the fan base please act reasonable and not bash a 18 year old for making a decision that he feels is best for him? (Dumb question.)

      2:25 pm January 17, 2014 Permalink

Most of the fans will not even reply or care. You won’t find these fans on blogs or online speaking their opinion. However there are always going to be a small percentage of idiots or trolls trying to make us look bad that act a certain way creating a perception that all of the fanbase acts that way.

    • Hawkeye Tim

You are right. The small (minded) percentage of fans will act in a manner that makes the rest of look foolish. If he chooses Alabama, how can you blame him? Alabama football is the UK basketball of college. If you want to be the best, compete against the best day in and day out.

Hey Drew, Can you put on KSR, the updated depth chart for 2014 football roster?. You did several of those last year and did a good job. Our overall talent level should be light tears ahead of 2013, with
    so many additional 4* recruits.

Elam is all about Elam. I agree with red headed stepchild, he tweets all this stuff so he gets on websites like this one. As a true Kentucky fan I am not the least bit worried about what he does. Of course he’s rated high, he’s 6’6” 360 pounds. It would be hard not to be at least a 3 star with that size. We’ll be just fine without him.

    • DT
      2:47 pm January 17, 2014 Permalink

I am not sure if there is such a thing, but i personally feel he is “too big” to be a DT. He looks top heavy and could easliy be blocked back. He may be a good run stopper, but thats about it. Where ever he chooses, he needs to slim down about 30 lbs to be a good DT. Otherwise switch to OT … thats just my opinion.

Who cares? Kid is too heavy and slow. Just watch his highlight videos, he’s a big tub of goo. And he apparently loves attention. Kids that drag on their recruitment like this cause me to hate em. Idc where he goes. The way he’s acted I kinda hope we don’t get him

    • L1C5
      2:21 pm January 17, 2014 Permalink

Just curious as to how many national championship teams you’ve coached. More than Saban? Bc Saban wants him despite you deeming him “too heavy and slow”

    • 9-asty
      2:30 pm January 17, 2014 Permalink

I agree with cats baby. The kid is overrated and overhyped by KSR. The only recruiting service to have him as a 5* is 247. Rivals has him as a 3 (although they list his weight at 225 so I don’t know how reliable the ranking is), and espn has him as a 4.

As far as everyone validating his talent by saying “well Saban wants him so he must be good” is off base. Everyone who has seen him play knows he needs to get into better shape before he can contribute. Saban is recruiting him for his size only and knows he can develop into a force in the middle with the right coaching and conditioning. Just because Bama wants him in no way means he is legit. Do you think Saban has never missed on a recruit?

I’ll never understand this.

If Stoops wants Elam, I want him to be at UK too. I wish there were not so many people making negative comments on any forum that just reinforce the past, but that is just being wishful. Success breeds success, but it has to start somewhere and some time. Why not ease up and give it a chance to start now? Elam has size for sure. Get him on campus AT UK and give your opinions a couple of years down the line.

  17. Hi "C"
    3:05 pm January 17, 2014 Permalink

If he picks UK, He will be a hero in the state and a Legend. He will get a TON OF ATTENTION in which he likes. If he picks Bama, He will be buried in their all-star roster and you will never hear from him every again in Bama or from the BBN. He will be just be an after thought at his High School over the years. He can say goodbye to KSR, Catspause, and UK Rivials websites. No more info on Elam and his tweets. When he finishes his career at Alabama no one from the state of KY will care. Job networking might be a little harder when he comes back home. Sounds harsh…..but it could happen.

    • Hawkeye Tim
      3:10 pm January 17, 2014 Permalink

Hi “C”–you’ve just identified a big reason he could choose UK. I also think Stoops/Elliot will be able to develop players–Elam included.

    • 9-asty
      3:11 pm January 17, 2014 Permalink

He would not be a hero at UK because he is not any good. Also, he is a DT which is one of the least exciting positions in the game. If anyone is going to be an in-state hero this year it’s Barker. Elam will just be a big slob that goes in on 4th and 1 and falls forward to take up space. That’s not much of a hero.

  18. Bigbluetruth
    3:15 pm January 17, 2014 Permalink

Agreed, why would he want to come to UK over Bama? I would love to see him wearing blue and white given he’s from Kentucky, but what motivation would he have to come here now especially after witnessing Stoops first year as coach? (We’ll be lucky to sign who we can sign) Stoops I’m sure regrets taking the UK job to begin with. After all, had he stayed D coordinator at Fl State, he’d be celebrating a national championship. No way I see him being able to make the CATS legit. Here, Elam would be hoping and struggling just to be bowl eligible. At Bama, they’ll be playing for championships each year. No brainier, he gone!

The best? Playing for the best? Ah … you might have a little disagreement from Florida State. Wait, don’t leave out Oklahoma. Then of course there’s Auburn. Now they’ve jumped up and hired Lane Kiffin. Can you name me any place Kiffin has gone that he hasn’t left a train wreck behind? I really don’t think Alabama is necessarily the wise choice. Just my humble opinion.

    Uk fans,

please do not be classless like our lil brother fans are. Wish the kid the best and hope he comes plays for us. There seems to be plenty of “talent” scouts posting on here. Face it, you aren’t as good as evaluating talent as Nick Saban or Mark Stoops, so shut up.

Matt, hope your visit to Bama goes good. I hope to see you in blue next year.

Go to Bama were they have 2-3 plus players the same or better than you and hope and wish for quality PT timeget lost in the roster and sit on the sidelines be a cheerleader and WATCH your team win a national championship. Or at UK were you would most likely be a starter form day 1 and have a chance to build something special, get stats under your name and make a good argument to play at the next level. Or you go to Bama and tear it up and this post was all wrong. Either way good luck

If he comes here he’ll probably be a 4 year starter and have plenty of chances to impress NFL scouts. He goes to Bama he might see the field in 3-4 years and will probably never start. Bama is just too loaded at his position. Stay at home big guy! Your people need you!

It is a difficult choice but I believe Matt understands how important he is to Kentucky. If he were to need some time to work his way into being a star at Alabama there will be no sympathy for him. Alabama doesn’t want excuses or time, they simply demand.

This child has an opportunity few of us could ever dream about. Say what you will, I don’t know if I would be any different in the time it takes to decide. Either situation he chooses he wins, and wins big. The only situation that could be a down side is if he chose UK, and didn’t meet expectations, he would never hear the end of it. At Alabama, he would just be another dt on a team playing for championships.
I hope he has a great career wherever he ends up.

Elam will look huge standing on Bama’s sideline for the next 3 years. I would not be surprised if eventually they move him to the OL. At Bama they are always in the running for the best at every position. Elam has a long ways to go before he sees any playing time and could be recruited over. Good luck to him.
