The irony is that, honestly, neither Kentucky nor Duke, really needed him the way they did some of their other recruits in the class. The kid’s good and it would have been nice to have him, but we (and Duke) have other options inside. Neither team was going to be diminished if he chose the other way. That said, I hope Bolden has a nice career at Duke and has a good game against us when we eliminate them in the tourney next year.

Let’s see, we should put the team that is not the overall #1 seed in with San Diego St., Utah, and Gonzaga as the path to the final 4. That sounds about right. So we base it on geography allegedly, but we’ll put Duke in the South and throw a bunch of teams from the West coast in that region. Interesting. Then we’ll put the #1 overall Kentucky team in the midwest and keep teams from the midwest, which are generally much better than west coast teams, on that side of the bracket.

Yep, Jarrett Allen impressed me more — what little I saw of them both during all-star season. Bolden doesn’t strike me as a can’t-miss, in any case. Would have been nice to have, but I think we’ll be all right. Probably still a little tilted toward perimeter-oriented, especially if Briscoe comes back, but plenty of talent all around.

Let’s not slam the kid or his family. Duke is not UK, but it is a great basketball program with a classy coach that placed many players in the league. He didn’t ruin his chances of going pro, nor did he make a terrible life destroying decision. He didn’t make the decision we wanted, but he made the decision that was best for him. Wish him luck and move on.

I agree, I think K gets way too much respect, his teams are dirty and he gets a pass on everything!

    • VulcanEar
      3:05 pm May 19, 2016 Permalink

Yeah, class. He didn’t have to speak with Cawood after the 92′ shot, but he did. I’m 95% certain in the 1998 game he burned through all his time outs so they wouldn’t rub the score in. Duke was killing Tubby’s cats and there was no need for K to continuously call timeouts when Duke was playing like a machine. He did and my theory is he did so not to embarrass Tubby. It cost him thankfully, but that’s class. While I root against him, I have no ill feelings towards the man. He’s one of the most successful coaches of all time.

    • VulcanEar
      3:07 pm May 19, 2016 Permalink

“I think K gets way too much respect…”

How many championships has he won over what, three decades? Never heard of a coach winning that much for that long and someone saying they get “too much respect.” Do I like Duke? No. Do I want Duke to win? No. But reality is reality and reality proves K is one of the greatest ever.

    • 4everblue
      3:15 pm May 19, 2016 Permalink

He has been at Duke for 36 years had the best talent year in and year out, Duke gets the easiest bracket in the tournament every single year…no one can deny that, Hell if Coach Cal had all that going for him I believe he would equal or surpass him! He lies and gets caught publicly and that is dismissed, his teams have always played dirty, he teaches flopping and he gets the benefit of the doubt on practically every call. Plus Duke is in the ACC where the NCAA overlooks violations, i.e. Corey Maguette and Lance Thomas….or didn’t you hear about that?

    • VulcanEar
      3:20 pm May 19, 2016 Permalink

And Cal doesn’t get the best talent? Pitino didn’t have amazing talent? Hell, even Kansas has amazing talent as does most blue blood programs. Coach Cal, as great as he is, has still only won one national championship with absolutely loaded teams. Will he win more? I absolutely hope so. However, let’s not pretend UK doesn’t get amazing talent either. And flopping, love it or not, is now part of the game. It’s a technique that has advantages and those that realize it succeed. We aren’t discussing the NCAA and/or what they do/don’t do/overlook, we are talking about K.

    • 4everblue
      3:49 pm May 19, 2016 Permalink

Maybe you are not aware but Cal is in his 8th year at UK not his 36th at the same school. My point is that Duke has been pretty loaded every year and in 36 years with all those things in his favor has won 5. And K is the reason the NCAA overlooked those violations as if he is the chosen one. Do you think for a second Cal would be treated the same way? And again as for the easiest bracket ….who did Duke play on their way to the championship game the last time they won? No one! Go back and compare brackets over the years. And is tripping and stomping chests part of the game as well? I proud we don’t teach flopping here, it gains an advantage for those who can’t straight up win.

    • 4everblue
      4:02 pm May 19, 2016 Permalink

It took K 11 years to win his first championship. And if you believe he called time outs to not embarrass Tubby or any other coach you let me help you with your financial investments. As I remember UK won that game, largely because K had used all his time outs. The 92′ was in my opinion the last class move he ever made, but let’s be honest, he was given a gift after almost losing to a much less talented team on an unguarded last second shot. I’m quite sure he if forever grateful to Pitino for not guarding the inbounds shot and for Palfrey and Feldhaus not contesting the shot. Sounds like you look at him as the chosen one too.

    • VulcanEar
      4:08 pm May 19, 2016 Permalink

“And K is the reason the NCAA overlooked those violations as if he is the chosen one.”

      Evidence or hyperbole?

“Do you think for a second Cal would be treated the same way?” Possibly. However, what I think has nothing to do with the discussion. Again, we are talking about K and his success. Reality. How it happened is one thing, but it happened. I’ll take results over excuses.

“And again as for the easiest bracket ….who did Duke play on their way to the championship game the last time they won? No one! Go back and compare brackets over the years. And is tripping and stomping chests part of the game as well?”

So K picks the brackets? Again, I fail to see how your rants against the NCAA has anything to do with K. You can argue convincingly the NCAA shows favoritism towards Duke, but that has nothing to do with K’s success. They still have to win games, they still have to have the players and they still need a coach. Results over excuses.

“And is tripping and stomping chests part of the game as well?” I’m sure K did not draw a play where a player purposely stomps and trips a player. Now you’re reaching the bottom of your diatribe.

“And if you believe he called time outs to not embarrass Tubby or any other coach you let me help you with your financial investments. As I remember UK won that game, largely because K had used all his time outs.”

Yes. Duke was destroying UK and K burnt his timeouts. Why? Why continuously call timeouts when you’re crushing the opponent and not slowing down? Unless you want to slow down the game and not run up the score….

“The 92′ was in my opinion the last class move he ever made, but let’s be honest, he was given a gift after almost losing to a much less talented team on an unguarded last second shot. I care none about your opinion. No, he’s not “the chosen one,” whatever that means (I have no idea). However, he is one of the greatest coaches of all time and I have nothing but respect for him. Do I like Duke? No. Do I like everything K does? No. But REALITY and RESULTS prove K is one of the greats and will forever be remembered as such.

Vulcan Ear let me give you a little history lesson before you make a complete ass of yourself slobbering all over “K” and his heavenly virtues. He called time outs so Tubby would look good!!! Three of Duke’s last time outs were called by Duke players while going out of bounds to save a possession. I have the game recorded or you can find it on you tube. So don’t paint angel wings and a halo on Rat Face because the image does not fit.

    • VulcanEar
      5:07 pm May 19, 2016 Permalink

Not painting halo wings, simply saying history will judge K as one of the all-time greats. I enjoy basketball and respect talent. Sometimes that talent is the team I root for and sometimes it is not. Regardless, I recognize and appreciate it. Same with K. I didn’t care too much for Kobe, but I was still happy he played as he made the league better. I also enjoyed watching him play as that level of athleticism is rare. If you look at CBB history, K’s pedigree is also rare. So you can root against him which I do, but he makes the sport better. With that, I don’t fault Bolden for picking Duke though I wish he picked UK. He didn’t and instead went to another great program.

    • 4everblue
      11:11 am May 20, 2016 Permalink

And I care none about your opinion either, you obviously have some weird bromance with K. Ken Grizzle is right, you need to know your history before you make such ridiculous statements such as “Duke was killing Tubby’s cats and there was no need for K to continuously call timeouts when Duke was playing like a machine. He did and my theory is he did so not to embarrass Tubby.” I too respect talent but what I do not respect is unfair advantages, not an excuse. K gets breaks because of people like yourself who see him as some kind of basketball god. You sound more like a Duke troll than a UK fan and if you are a UK fan I sincerely hope you switch teams. And as for Bolden, it is well documented he wanted to play at UK but his mother was determined for him to play for Duke. I’m not saying Duke is not a good program or K is not a good coach, actually the most impressive thing for me is that K has coached for the same school for 36 yrs. but to say he and Duke do not get the benefit of certain unfair advantages is a claim usually made by Dukies. If you have evidence to the contrary please share.

Was going to be a tough decision either way as both teams are loaded.

My starting lineup predictions now are:

Duke: Frank Jackson, Grayson, Tatum, Giles, Amile Jefferson

Kentucky: Fox, Monk, Gabriel, Willis, Bam (changes possibly if Brisco returns)

I see Willis coming off the bench and filling in at the 3 and 4 spot, depending on what Lee and Briscoe do. But Sacha may surprise us. He’s a 5 star too and a high motor so a lot could happen

  25. ukisgr8

momma acts like she just got paid. I mean, if he went to Desoto community college for one year he’s going to be a lottery pick after one year anyway so why would she act like that for one year of college if she picked Duke, Kentucky, or EKU? I could see him being that excited but her? That’s just weird. Kidding about the money obviously, but that reaction is limited to a 3 star kid who wants to be a doctor and got lucky and got a scholarship to Duke. That would be the reaction I would expect. smh

  26. Mc12

I may be in the minority on this one, but I was never overly impressed with his game and motor. I followed the recruitment though more so because it came down to Duke and Kentucky. If it was us and TCU, I wouldn’t have really cared honestly because I don’t think Bolden is that much better than Humphries.

Coach K got whoever he WANTED! Except one player. Now lets compare that to Cal who went HARD after Harry Giles and HARD after Tatum who was Cal’s first offer in the class! And we already know about Bolden. So the score is 3 K and Cal 1 for the 2016 Class. This is coming from a Kentucky fan. I just call it as I see it.

  30. Mathlete

Didn’t he get utterly dominated in one of the all-star games over the summer? I’m not sweating this kid. Would have been nice to have him but we’ll be better than fine without him.

Plus, even as stacked as Duke will be next year, they’ll probably lose to McNeese State in the first round of the tournament.

  31. Kyblue34
    3:13 pm May 19, 2016 Permalink

I’m sorry but it seems like it was Duke all along, and he was just trolling. He could have committed to Duke several weeks ago and allowed us to move on to other options. That and wearing the TCU shirt today are just dick moves from a very immature kid. But with that said, this one hurts and we could have really used him next year. Plus, this makes Duke the heavy favorite to win it all next year. This also makes the second year in a row that Cal has went “all in” on one center prospect and whiffed. Has Cal become too nice on the recruiting trail? I don’t understand why we didn’t pursue Allen more as he has looked better than Bolden anyway and was really wanting us to show him some love. Oh well, I guess Bam will have to play the 5 almost exclusively with help from Humphries. That’s certainly not terrible, but not ideal either.

I certainly don’t follow recruiting like I use to when Cal first arrived as there is little reason to worry about who is coming in next. I do follow recruiting though when it gets down to UK and another (or few) school for top players (which is most all of Cal’s kids). I’ll wish the young man good luck moving forward and hope he achieves his dreams.

I think UK would have been a better team with him but life is such…you don’t get what you want just because. UK will move forward and now there is an opportunity for other kids to step up and fill the role.
