Louisville the only program in college basketball history to vacate a title

The University of Louisville is now the only program in college basketball history to vacate a national championship.

Following the NCAA’s decision to uphold their ruling, the program must vacate all games in which ineligible players participated, so 123 regular season wins and 15 NCAA tournament wins, as well as individual records and stats from those seasons (even for the players not involved, which seems unfair). As a result, they must remove all mentions of their 2012 Final Four appearance and 2013 National Championship.

“From here, we will officially remove the formal recognitions from our facilities, but not from our minds,” Interim Athletic Director Vince Tyra said.

“We believe the NCAA is simply wrong to have made this decision,” Interim President Greg Postel said, citing the lack of precedent.

UofL must also pay the NCAA a $600,000 fine, which is well under Dan Dakich’s original report of $15 million from last month. Here is Postel’s statement on the ruling:

If the banner must come down, does that mean Pitino’s tattoo must come off as well?

Visiting the message boards at Card Chronicle for some schadenfreude… my favorite comment is from someone saying “at least UK didn’t beat us in the 2012 and 2014 tournaments”

This is actually false. Only victories are scrubbed. Losses are eternal.

If they weren’t in the Final 4, I doubt they could have lost a game in the final 4.

What did Louisville think was going to happen? Strippers/ hookers brought into a dorm by a UL Coach and paid for by said Coach! Penalty may be ground breaking, but so was the offense

Devil’s advocate… University-6 may be the only one to have to vacate a title because other school’s (UNC) have friend’s in high NCAA places. Without question UNC should’ve been stripped of 2005 and probably 2009.

Exactly right. Their offenses were more unseemly, maybe the sleaziest conduct apart from the abuse scandals at Penn State and MSU. But the pervasive, cynical, decades long academic fraud scandal is actually more deserving of this punishment bc it DIRECTLY affected the quality of play, by putting people on the court or field to perform against an opponent when they were INELIGIBLE to play. That actively disadvantages teams that played by the rules! THAT demands forfeiting wins! The NCAA is such a morally bankrupt bureaucracy they couldn’t even stumble into Justice with both hands, GPS and a flashlight.

Add dook, and probably UCLA to that list. If I am a Louisville fan, I am extremely pissed at that alone.

I don’t care how much you hate Louisville, this is stupid. So we just have no champion that year? Dumb. Put an asterisk by it like Bonds’ homerun record, punish them going forward, but to take it down like the games weren’t played? I just don’t get it.

Poor UL fans. (Not) 2011-2015 didn’t even happen. What a waste!

My only hope is that the UL fans can put this behind them…….and look forward to the FBI investigation coming up….Dope!!! (too soon??).

what about ucla with one of their boosters in the 70s paying players not vacating those titles . noooooo we can’t touch a team coached by wooden. UNC should also be vacating wins and maybe titles too. based on the ncaas own track record they shouldn’t vacate this title unless they go back in time and vacate every single title they found someone cheated for. I honestly can’t believe they vacated a title. hasn’t uconn been in trouble too? if so when?

Just remember going forward, UofL, strippers — no, fake classes, etc – ok

Is it okay if Rick just never goes shirtless again? Because that would be better for everyone.

The NCAA can take down the championship banner, but they can NEVER take Rick’s championship back tattoo!

It was the tawdry nature of the offense. It’s disgusting. A coach paying for UNDER AGE girls for the players. Not as bad perhaps as MSU’s cover ups of a guy who basically sexually assaulted children entrusted to the school for years or Penn State (that still makes me sick). But which one actually influences on field performance more: stripper parties or having hundreds of ineligible athletes take the field against opponents they should never have faced under NCAA rules? Hmmmm I’m thinking Carolina actually won games it would not have won. Louisville behaved badly but they didn’t win games they would not have won, unless u stretch and say lap dances are impermissible benefits. Ok. They are. But that’s not why they got hit, it was bc their conduct was indecent and tawdry and offensive not bc they gained competitive advantage. Anyone agree?

      Nope.

They did try to force prostitutes on high school recruits, that’s awful.

    • Bobbum Man
      5:01 pm February 20, 2018 Permalink

It makes no difference, UMASS won no games because Marcus camby spoke to an agent either… the fact is they received impermissible benefits, even the awfulness of what it all was aside, receiving impermissible benefits is all it takes for a player(s) to be ruled ineligible which then means all wins that player took part in are void. And u can’t possibly say that because maybe somewhere along the line they actually convinced recruits to come to UL using this disgusting tactics in which they then won games they wouldn’t have

I agree with the above comment about UCLA. It was the filthiest institution in the country for years under Wooden. How he continues to be deified by the media is ridiculous. He was not strong enough to stand up to a booster and pretended nothing was happening.

When asked by a reporter today Pitino was quoted, “This is not the time to talk about this subject as we honor Fredrick Douglas who died on this date in 1895.”

    • Mathlete

They beat us last year and losses don’t get vacated, so it’s more like 9-1

The $600,000 is not an issue. You charge $30 a head for the banner lowering ceremony, and BBN shows up 20,000 strong, guaranteed!

I’m unclear about something. They pay a $600,000 fine but they ALSO must give back the money they won in those years. You KNOW that’s more then $600K. How can we find out that amount?
