Mayor Greg Fischer has fired Louisville Metro Police chief Steve Conrad.
Conrad was scheduled to retire June 30. His last day in office was rescheduled after it was discovered that LMPD body cameras were not activated and operating when David McAtee was shot and killed by law enforcement early Monday morning.
The incident occurred at 12:15 a.m. in the parking lot of Dino’s Food Mart, located at 26th and Broadway, miles away from the downtown protests. McAtee owned a nearby restaurant, Yaya’s BBQ.
As people gathered after the 9 p.m. curfew in the parking lot, officers and National Guard soldiers arrived at the scene to “clear the lot,” resulting in the shots fired. Governor Andy Beshear ordered an independent investigation of the event by the Kentucky State Police and Mayor Greg Fischer extended Louisville’s curfew through June 8.
