I hope Cal is as mad today as he was last night. Gotta try something new to motivate these guys.

Worst defense i have ever seen. They got up by 25 and they quit . Nice to see the zone last night. Can some one hustle after a rebound ? Briscoe stop shooting the three. WE WON.

Getting up big and taking your foot off the gas is common with young teams. You have to give LSU credit for continuing to play….they played like a team with nothing to lose; and hit their three’s.

I can *SOMEWHAT* excuse ONLY winning by 7. because that should have been a 12-15 point game, they just hit like 3-4 threes to close it at the end. so that part isn’t THAT bad.

However, we made all the same mistakes we’ve been making the last few weeks. Our defense is just bad. it just got bailed out by a great offensive performance, particularly by WG.

This entire year is summed up by terribly inconsistent officiating in the SEC. A call in the first half gets let go in the second. a charge in one game is a block in the next. Our guys don’t know how to play defense because a basket and1 for the other team is a charge for us. So they have been just getting out of the way. Bam got butchered by the commentators last night for not getting in position, he and isaac both had three fouls. Was he supposed to step in and get a blocking foul? go to the bench with 13 minutes left in the game? what are we supposed to do?

I really don’t know how to fix it. and you know what’s going to happen? we’re going to get bullied in the tourney bc they other defenses will be playing much tighter and we won’t be able to adjust. So our offense will be down. and we will continue to give up 80-85 ppg bc we are too afraid to play real defense for fear of fouling out. And we’re going to lose in the first weekend to a team we should beat by 15. SEC has enough money, just fire all of the officiating and buy out the big east guys or something. seriously. that is the only idea i have.

    • runningunnin.454
      10:37 am February 8, 2017 Permalink

I did read it; and you’re right. We were playing defense until, I think, the Vandy game and Monk and Fox were on the bench with two fouls inside of 3 minutes.
The inconsistency is destroying sec teams.

The SEC has got to have the worst refs in all of college basketball.

    • RealCatsFan

I thought that some of the ref’s rotated to some of the other leagues as well…

    • RealCatsFan
      10:51 am February 8, 2017 Permalink

So let’s just say refs be damned and play defense! I would rather lose a game because of foul trouble rather than get embarrassed by matador defense. Pitino used to just have his teams hack to the point where the refs simply cannot call all the fouls so they let them go. Maybe bring Sacha in there for 5 extra fouls. Because what we are doing no sure as hell is not working.

To be fair, we still have the most all around talent in my opinion. We’re just not utilizing it. Not sure what the problem is, but our lack of consistency shooting the ball won’t allow us to pull of a 6 game run in the tournament. This will be the year a 2nd tier team like West Virginia or Oregon will finally win it.

Lonzo Ball is definitely gone. He’s projected to go 1-2 in the the draft.

    • Agreed RCF. I don’t want them to extend their lead or for any who are at 5 to get closer to us. Matt disagrees because he said he wants someone who plays racehorse bball like UNC or UCLA to win it, as opposed to the karate chop & grab and slow it down defensive teams. Sorry, I want us to at least get 9. I’ve given up on us catching UCLA.

BTW, like my reference to the 1978 team? For those who don’t know, some coach or writer accused us of playing karate defense that year. It’s fun being the heel team!

    • runningunnin.454

Actually it was Ray Mears, coach at Tennessee that originally made the comments about UK’s Karate defense in an article about the 1975 ‘Cats. Connor, Flynn, Guyette and Grevey were the seniors, Robey, Phillips, Givens and Lee the freshmen. Lots of talk back then about how Coach Hall had adapted the European style of basketball to his team (Joe B. back then was close to the Russian National Team coach and they regularly played each other in exhibitions). One thing for sure–that team was afraid of no one and nothing.

The last few minutes of the game last night made my eyes bleed. Such a poor performance on D in the 2nd half. We got outscored by 9 in the 2nd. Piss poor effort to grab boards. Shooting was a little better, but you better be able to put up 90 if you can’t rebound or play defense.

He doesn’t rebound or play defense either. Willis played 14 minutes last night and was 0-4 from the floor with 4 rebounds. He’s 6’9″ for crap sakes!! Hawkins only played 15 minutes and had 4 rebounds too, but he’s a 6’1″ guard.

It’s because he doesn’t move away from the ball, and basically just stands around out by the three point line and waits for someone else to create shots for him and get him the ball.

  13. WatchutalkinboutWillis
    10:37 am February 8, 2017 Permalink

I think the sky is the limit for Fox. Same with Monk…not sure why they aren’t playing D but if they start that would be great. Bam is a different story. It’s time to admit that he just isn’t that good. What does he do well? Bam and our bench were over-rated by everyone, myself especially. I thought we were a really deep team. We aren’t. We are playing 9 guys and the only reason it is that many is because our starters are so inconsistent. Willis hasn’t improved. Hawkins is limited. Mulder works as a 4th guard option. Humphries just isn’t good enough.

    • Jiminy Crickets
      10:54 am February 8, 2017 Permalink

who’s fault is this?? In the preseason, we heard Humphries “was a different player” and had “progressed more than anyone”.
We were told Mulder was ready to contribute and would push for minutes.
Calipari was quoted when asked about SKJ “Sacha’s body is not the same as it was two and a half months ago, They’re so young that it’s like putting water on a flower. They just start to blossom. Look, I knew Sacha was good — I wouldn’t have him here if I didn’t think he was good — but I didn’t know he was this good.”
Calipari: “This year, because of the team I’m coaching, we’ll probably be 75 percent defense and not much offense. What we are is that we’ve got shot-blocking. We’ve got size. We’ve got some strength. Those four guards will just maul you. De’Aaron Fox is going nose to nose with Malik Monk and they went after each other and De’Aaron stole the ball from him twice. You just have guys who can maul people.”

SOMEONE explain how he was this wrong about everything he said about this team

    • UKSam
      2:18 pm February 8, 2017 Permalink

No shot blocking threat also allows guards to put their head down and drive.

I said this on another thread. Marcus Lee would have really helped us. Heck a summer of weights and pick up games may have made Skal a 10-15 min player. The two things he could do was hit the 15 ft jump shot and block shots. This is the first year he really don’t have an eraser.

    • RealCatsFan
      11:20 am February 8, 2017 Permalink

I recall comments about Humphries being “ready” to make an impact. Also remember a lot of hype about Bam. We heard a lot of talk about the football team at the beginning of every season too. Some coaches like to hype the kids up. But the downside of that hype is when they don’t measure up. Kind of unfair to the kids, IMO.

    • Realme

I guess Cal was trying to use the power of suggestion to mold this team into what it should be.

    • unbridled
      11:27 am February 8, 2017 Permalink

You do realize that scoring is only 1 aspect to the game of basketball right? The “unlimited potential” guards either refuse to play defense or rebound…or they simply can’t physically do it. Either way, it’s holding the team back as much if not more than bams inconsistent and sub par play. Shot
Selection from the guards would help mightily as well. People are piling on bam but give the flashy guards a pass. At least bam puts forth effort. Can’t say the same for everyone.

    • Laker Cat 18
      11:27 am February 8, 2017 Permalink

In reference to our bigs (and by bigs I mean Humphries and Bam), they can’t seem to either stay out of foul trouble. I love Humphries’ hustle. He’s got a little Jorts in him. Bam, while he produces decently, he should be MUCH more of a freak. He reminds me of Randolph Morris. Dude’s just got to do it.

In Hump’s defense, he has buzzard luck with the phantom foul calls.

    • WatchutalkinboutWillis
      11:37 am February 8, 2017 Permalink

Unbridled you must be watching a different game than me! I don’t see Bam putting forth effort on either end! No one is giving the guards a pass either! The fact is that the way that Fox and Monk were playing earlier in the year won us alot of games. The same can’t be said for Bam.

Great point, Crickets. I remember Cal saying almost all that stuff. The team isn’t where it should be and it does come back on Cal. I can’t stand the point that Cal can’t make the players play harder…he CAN put players in that play hard to prove a point.

    • For all of our criticism of Slickie Rickie in recent years, his teams ALWAYS played hard IMO! There was the occasional dud, but one was against UT when we lost a close one, then we beat them by like 50 in the SEC tourney.

Cameron Mills has talked about fearing Pitino and why they didn’t let up when they had a team down. He says they knew if they let up, no matter how big their lead was, Rick was going to kill them in practice.

Mulder had zero rebounds last night and looked lost most of the time. He had one steal and one turnover. Mulder has had a couple of good games but is too inconsistent.

Hawkins is one of our best and most consistent defenders and probably should get more playing time.

    • WatchutalkinboutWillis
      11:59 am February 8, 2017 Permalink

And I hope UK does…and I expect them to in a way. Last year is still too fresh in my mind and I kept waiting and waiting for it to click…it never did. A cold performance from Murray and we are out. This year is the same with Monk. But hopefully we can make it happen! I’m not giving up…but do think they need a boot up their backsides.
But I would be fine if Duke kept losing.

Mulder is coming off illness…but at least he is a senior and could be used to prove a point. I would rather have an inconsistent Mulder in for a half and light a fire under Monk than have an inconsistent Monk for the entire game. Maybe that’s just me.

Throwing axes, called tomahawks, are becoming more and more popular in the U.S. Military. Some elite forces members choose to carry the tomahawk instead of the combat knife.
In the ’60’s, we would train in close quarter battle with the tomahawk, one hand was tied to the other guy’s hand, and the hawk would be in the other hand…the blades were rubber.
