Let’s overreact to this Doc Rivers quote that may or may not imply Duke pays well
Doc Rivers took his Los Angeles Clippers to Oklahoma City last night, only to give up 32 points to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The former Cat took down the Western Conference contender in Paul George’s return to OKC, but it’s a quote from Rivers that has KSR’s attention today.
When asked about Thunder head coach Billy Donovan, Rivers joked that his son, Austin Rivers, would’ve gone to Florida if Donovan had offered more cash. The young Rivers went to Duke instead, which makes his old man’s quote about Donovan real spicy for all of the Duke haters like us.
“He’s an excellent coach,” Rivers said to Joe Mussatto. “And if he had paid more, Austin would’ve went to Florida.”

To be fair, Mussatto, who many of you may recognize from the UK beat a few years ago, later pointed out that Rivers was laughing when he said. I’m sure he was only kidding around, but this is America and in America we’re free to form our own thoughts and opinions and my opinion on this particular topic is that Duke dropped the bag for Austin Rivers, confirmed by his own father, the head coach of the Clippers.
I think we have a real controversy here and the NCAA should open up an investigation.

I don’t think anyone questions the assertion that Duke pays their players. The relevant question is whether or not the NCAA can prove it.

If UK paid players, they without a doubt would’ve been caught and punished severely by now. Also, going to UK if you’re a high level talent pays for itself. I mean UK players, since Cal started, have made over a billion dollars in NBA contracts alone. Uuuhhhh what?? No it doesn’t Blueblood. Duke didn’t get in trouble bc it’s Duke and Coach K. They could hand money to a recruit of national tv and the NCAA would be like “what cash?”… and Duke doesn’t get players to the NBA like UK does, and it’s not even close. The players Duke does put in the NBA end up being garbage for the most part. So, my logic is perfectly sound…

Sure Duke pays players,we all know that,and as someone said they could do it on national TV and the NCAA would say there TV was out that day.
I absolutely don’t think UK pays any players right now, Sandy Bell does a good job,and Coach Calipari really doesn’t have to sell Kentucky,it sells itself. Most wins ever,championships are 2nd most,sec tourneys,sec titles,but even more so national TV exposure a lot,big time attention,and NBA opportunities,which are not only the most since Calipari got here, UK’s NBA players have played much better than any other,and yes I’m willing to argue the point,and of course the salaries from those players….enough said !
