With his team taking on NC State tonight for a spot in the Super Regional, today’s a busy day for Nick Mingione, but the first-year head coach made time to come on the radio show this morning. Mingione discussed his team’s big day yesterday, which included wins over Indiana and NC State to force tonight’s Game 7, and his emotional postgame comments about Marcus Carson. The senior centerfielder had four hits between the two games yesterday, including two home runs, and Mingione said his success was especially gratifying given how hard he’s worked this season, both on the field and in the classroom.
“He was just phenomenal. I just told him I couldn’t miss this opportunity to brag about him because in our program, you’ve heard me say this over and over, I evaluate our guys everyday in three different areas: as a student, person, player,” Mingione said. “I’m just so proud of him because his career hasn’t gone the way he wanted the first three years of his baseball career and now here he is, on the biggest stage, just doing awesome and I’m just so proud of him.”
Check out Mignione’s call around the 23-minute mark of hour two, including the latest on UK’s pitching situation. Then, go to Ticketmaster and secure your tickets for tonight’s game (reserved grandstand and outfield decks seats are sold out, but general admission is still available). As Mingione said, the fans really do make a difference.
“I really believe with my heart that the crowd last night got us at least two or three more runs and I believe that was the difference in the game. We got their pitchers in a tough stretch, the fans started cheering, they started throwing balls, they started celebrating. Matt, this is awesome! This has never happened at The Cliff. The warm-up pitcher is throwing balls and our fans are celebrating!”
