I’m still waiting for a tougher front court, that rebounds great and can score at the rim, but I think that will come. As for now, it is seriously time to get excited. Our guards are phenomenal.

Sloth from the Goonies, ahem, I mean – Jeff Goodman, penned a ridiculously lukewarm review of last night’s performance. He remains bitter over his Cal-imposed exile.

As good as Monk looked, that’s how bad Bam looks – And not just to me…Others are taking notice…

    Jeff Goodman —
The NBA guys I spoke to during and after last night’s games said that Malik Monk was by far most impressive frosh – because known as an inconsistent shooter, made 7 3’s. “He’s so explosive and can shoot it. I wish he was 6-5 and not 6-3, though.” Other than Monk, most of the NBA folks weren’t all that impressed with the freshmen (remember, there was no Harry Giles, Jayson Tatum or Marques Bolden). Josh Jackson made a couple perimeter shots, and some were blown away by De’Aaron Fox’s pure speed with the ball in his hands. The biggest disappointment? “Bam (Adebayo). I know he’s a physical specimen,” said one GM. “But he has a long way to go.”

Bam looked bad to me too – And they NEED him and his rebounding – They were outrebounded by a team with a walk-on center!

In this case, he (or the NBA scouts) are right – Bam didn’t look so good

      10:17 am November 16, 2016 Permalink

Bam will find his spot. they made a lot of adjustments to the way they are officiating the paint this year (or so it seems). It will be a big adjustment for him to defend without fouling and using his size to his advantage. a couple of times last night he just overpowered whoever was defending him and then got offensively called. Our coaches have proven year in and out they can get our bigs positioned to do good things (except last year – ouch). I wouldn’t be worried at all about Bam’s production so far.

Bam will be fine. He’s a freshman, he’ll work it out. What should concern you is the complete lack of defense from Derek Willis.

    • It was the 3rd game. Chill.

SO great they won’t even be able to have the undefeated conversation. Wonder how much better they’ll be when healthy though. Surely they wouldn’t be able to run with UK.

They only sat their best 3 players and lost on a last second shot to a top 10 team. Incredibly overrated…. smh

You realize they were missing three of tehir best players, right?

    • EdC
      10:17 am November 16, 2016 Permalink

Duke will be good BUT championships are won with defense and having great point guard leadership helps. Duke has neither. As always they live and die by the 3 point shot … sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t which makes them more vulnerable in every game when the games become real.

    • RealCatsFan
      10:19 am November 16, 2016 Permalink

Keep in mind that Kansas had to travel from Hawaii, and most of their starters were playing with 3 of 4 fouls for most of the game. We will just have to wait and see how good dook will be when/if they get their freshmen back. Giles is questionable – unfortunately the kid has had a LOT of serious knee issues.

    • CATandMONKEY
      10:20 am November 16, 2016 Permalink

They are the manifestation of their present state. Those three guys aren’t playing currently so the team that played last night is the Duke of “now.” What if Willis, Bam, Humphries and Gabriel start producing at a level that both experts and fans exoect? smh

    • WatchutalkinboutWillis
      10:27 am November 16, 2016 Permalink

Define “best” RBT…According to multiple sources Grayson “Douchebag” Allen is the best player in the country and he was out there along with multiple other 4 and 5 star guys. They lost to a Kansas team that I don’t think is really that great.

    • RBT
      10:35 am November 16, 2016 Permalink

Duke has 3 players projecting as top 15 draft picks. None of them have Allen as a first or last name. My point is, you cannot measure Duke’s team that was on the floor last night and project them as being overrated and bad on defense. They are missing 3 starters.

    • runningunnin.454
      10:37 am November 16, 2016 Permalink

I realize Dook was missing three players; I watched the game. It’s questionable if the best of the three will be able to play at all….really, he shouldn’t play this year if K has any consideration for the kid’s future.
And, once again, the refs took care of K’s team…the officiating was one way as usual. Of course, if Kansas could hit FT’s, the game would not have been close at all.
Duke’s weakness is guard play…Allen and Kennard are slow, neither are a point guard, and their defense is weak. Our guards would eat them up.

    • EdC
      10:45 am November 16, 2016 Permalink

Not that hard to categorize Duke as bad on defense and think that is how the season will end. Considering the level of talent they acquire their adjusted D over the last decade has been in the top 10 only once and they have been out of the top 20 4 times with 3 of those being WAY out of the top 20.

    • ukjaybrat
      10:52 am November 16, 2016 Permalink

I will concede that this is probably not the same duke team we’ll see in march. but no one is. we will all get much better as we practice and play (and duke’s players aren’t getting that right now because they are sitting on the bench with injuries). So I won’t be surprised if those guys bloom late.

That being said, you don’t give a team a pass because they had some injured players that didn’t play. a loss is a loss. They won’t be ranked #1 Monday. They will probably drop somewhere 5-7. Uk will takeover #1, Kansas will move back up to around 4-5. MSU unfortunately will drop to a LOW top 25 ranking because although they are 0-2 on the season, they’ve lost to 2 top ranked teams without the benefit of getting any other games in. They will be a decent enough team in march.

Duke drop to 5-7? They could lose 2 more games and will still be ranked in the top 5.

I replied in the other post that there is NO WAY the trolls can argue that Cal is paying for recruits when stuff like this happens. It kind of shines the light the other way – what could a football school like Miami possibly offer a 5-star basketball player (basketball wise). They must be using UofL’s recruiting manual.

    • J-Dub421
      10:26 am November 16, 2016 Permalink

Walker to Miami makes no sense. Miami was barely on his recruiting radar, then all of a sudden he commits out of the blue? Something happened.

  10. I may be wrong, but I don’t remember Rex being streaky. I thought he was pretty consistent. Now, Jay Shidler, that’s a different story. It seemed like he could make 10 in a row and then go stone cold.

Looks like Rex to me, too. But I’ve got another comparison: Michael Jordan.

Both of y’all are too young to remember MJ as a freshman, but trust me, it’s an apt comparison at the same stage in their careers.

Derrick Willis played a much better game last night than the box score indicated. Four of Monk’s 3s were because of Willis.

    • J-Dub421
      11:48 am November 16, 2016 Permalink

Willis also gave up many wide open shots. If he doesn’t play defense, he won’t play. Cal demands defense.

    • WatchutalkinboutWillis
      12:01 pm November 16, 2016 Permalink

Willis is going to lose all his minutes to Wenyen Gabriel if he doesn’t make every second on the court count. Which is very unfortunate because I think he could be on the path to being drafted if he does get better defensively and gains confidence offensively. But he needs to start getting in the double digits in the scoring column or the additional aspects of his game won’t even be looked at.

    • Realme
      12:24 pm November 16, 2016 Permalink

Totally agree. Derek should finish this season by being drafted, but Wenyen is outworking him so far.

    • EdC
      12:57 pm November 16, 2016 Permalink

Wenyen logged 24 minutes to Derek’s 16 and it wasn’t because Derek was in foul trouble. Pretty clear message from Cal that Wenyan had afar better night than Derek. Look to Cal’s comments about 2 players being casual in the shoot around and it carrying over to the game and it sure looks like Derek was one of those casual guys..
