KSR’s Road to Rupp: 15th Region Tournament Preview

KSR is covering the Kentucky high school basketball postseason, from region tournaments all the way to the Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena (March 31st to April 3rd). Over the next week, we’ll be providing previews of each region, updates on each round, and in-depth coverage of the finals. On Monday, the 15th Region Tournament tips off in eastern Kentucky. Here’s a preview: 


Johnson Central (19-3), Paintsville (12-8), Shelby Valley (17-8), Belfry (16-9), East Ridge (15-8), Lawrence County (11-10), Betsy Layne (12-8), Pike County Central (16-10). 



Monday, March 22nd, 6:30 PM: East Ridge vs. Johnson Central. 8:15 PM-Betsy Layne vs. Pike County Central 

Tuesday, March 23rd, 6:30 PM: Belfry vs. Shelby Valley, 8:15 PM-Paintsville vs. Lawrence County. 

Friday, March 26th: Semifinals-6:30 and 8:15 PM

Saturday, March 27th, Finals-7:30 PM

All games will be played at the Appalachian Wireless Arena, Pikeville, KY. 

Team to Beat

Johnson Central Golden Eagles seem to be at the forefront of all sports in eastern Kentucky. The Golden Eagles enter the 15th Regional Tournament with a 19-3 record and an inside track to make the journey to Rupp Arena. Central opens up the festivities at the Appalachian Wireless Arena in Pikeville by taking on the East Ridge Warriors. Its led by Isaiah May’s 16.2 points per game. May is the team’s leading shooter from the three-point line by making 42.3% of his attempts.

Isaiah May-Johnson Central, Jordan Frazier-Betsy Layne, Isaac Woods-East Ridge, Josh Du Toit-Pike County Central, Bol Kuir-Belfry, Kaden Robinson-Shelby Valley, Colby Fugate-Paintsville, Cody Maynard-Lawrence County. 

Fun Fact

The 15th is a football powerhouse region. Paintsville, Belfry, Pikeville, and Johnson Central have all won football state championships within the last five seasons.

    Come on Freddie, you must not keep up with the 15th region very well. JC didn’t even win their district tournament. They are a good team but this region is a toss-up imo. Several teams are just starting to get it together after a crazy season.
