Hated to see Shannon go, but it needed to be done. I want this football program to do great.

    Caytes by 11 tomorrow afternoon.

Would love to have MM take his position. it would bring some solid experience in game management and OC… the obvious issue then would be our OC has more head coaching experience (and success in that position) than our head coach…

Mangino also has a history of abuse with his players, or at least several allegations of it. Eddie Gran would be a great hire, at least on paper. If you hire Mangino and those allegations follow, pr nightmare. If he actually treats kids as poorly as some former players cite, he would be a few nails in Stoops coffin. Hope hiring him is a rumor….

yeah but i doubt stoops will allow that garbage on his staff… i’m sure he could work out a situation where mangino could be leveraged for his experience without his tendancies for harsh behavior (to put it nicely)

either way, i just want experience with whoever he chooses (chose?) to bring in

Right. Im hoping Gran, kinda loathing the thought of Mangino, bit scared of Coley. Guy can recruit, but not loving his offensive numbers. Stoops has to hit a homerun this time.

Mangino has a history of NCAA problems and abuse of players and others associated with his program. I don’t like that background (or the fact that he blocks out so much of the background).

And at Iowa State he wasn’t even the full OC. He shared responsibilities with a passing game coordinator.

Cincinnati was #7 nationally in total offense. #24 in PPG.

I always feel bad when a coach is let go, or a player transfers, because I get hung up on how awful they must feel. But I am hopeful right now, that when all the changes are made, the chemistry among the team and among the coaching staff might be much better next year.

My problem with Mangino is that he has been primarily a one hit wonder. 2007 was his year and he hadn’t really done anything prior or since that year. I don’t think Gran is a “great” hire but a safe and solid hire. He’s made his rounds with some great programs between Auburn, Ole Miss, Florida State. He has only 2 years of OC under his belt, so he’s fairly new at that role.

…Assuming Matt is right in his guess that Gran could possibly be the next OC here at UK.

Matt are you saying that Wynyard couldn’t do better Saturday than 0 points, 0 rebounds and 5 fouls?

We need an offense with a dual-threat QB. We need more run production from the QB position. That’s what the college game is nowadays.

      10:32 am December 18, 2015 Permalink

i just want them to recruit a dual threat quarterback if for no other reason than to put him on the scout team because our defense CAN NOT stop one and louisville will have a decent one for at least another two years

Gran is an above average recruiter, and has coached in the sec for over a decade as a rb coach. Oc yes for only a couple years, but i think for what we have personnel wise, he would be a great fit.

Dean, I think a Cincinnati coach would help solidify the Ohio recruiting too maybe?

    • dean winchester

You would hope so. Gran won a national recruiter award in 2011 as well. Seems like a win win…

  9. Matt is correct that Texas A & M’s offense is not the same as Mumme’s Air Raid. However, remember that ESPN article that talks about Mumme’s coaching tree that was linked on this site some time ago (someone also posted the link in the comment section a couple days ago)? It says that Sumlin IS part of that tree (coached at Okie under OC Mangino I think), but that he does have his own stamp on it (more vertical passing than Mumme).

So, just because he may not run the exact same offense doesn’t mean it’s not a VARIATION of the Air Raid. That article even said Urban Meyer was influenced by Mumme somehow even though his offense is different.

If Dorian “brick hands” Baker hadn’t dropped two touchdown passess that were in his hands, we’d have beaten Florida and Auburn.

I have long thought they let people sit too close to the court. Not just the fans, but the scorer’s table, cameramen, cheerleaders, everyone is too close and it’s a safety issue. Back everyone up a few feet.

The Seinfeld episode Matt mentioned (“The Fire”) is one of the best ever. My favorite part of that one is when George starts arguing with “Eric the Clown” about Bozo the Clown. Ranks right up there with “The Contest” for me.

Best line from the episode: “You’re living in the past, man. You’re hung up on some clown from the ’60s, man!”

      I’m showing my age now… 😀

My favorite episode was the one with “Jimmy” at the gym, and where Mel Torme thinks Kramer is “special” at the end. “Jimmy likes Elaine.” “Jimmy’s gonna get you Kramer!!!”

    • Wow, so now we can’t even offend them??? I guess they should have called him the “Soup Not Very Nice Person”.

I saw on some show where people were in line for the real “Soup Not Very Nice Person’s” restaurant and they were hoping he would yell at them.

Ha – I completelly forgot about “The Hamptons” episode, where George gets walked in on by Jerry’s girlfriend when he is changing after getting out of the pool and she giggles when she sees the “frightened turtle”. “Shrinkage” will never mean the same thing again!

      “Do women know about shrinkage?”
“What do you mean, like laundry?”
      “No…”
      “Like when a man goes swimming… Afterwards…”
      “It shrinks?”
      “Like a frightened turtle.”
      “Why does it shrink?”
      “It just does.”
“I don’t know how you guys walk around with those things.”

All these OC’S you guys are talking about sound good but look at the teams they played. The Cinn guy has piled up some good numbers but if he comes here it’s going to be the same old BS. I don’t know the answer but when you are at the bottom every year in recruiting in your conference you are not going to win games in that conference no matter who the OC is. But we should be able to beat other teams outside the conference and did except for one.
