What do you guys think of the chippyness / technical foul propensity of this team? So far it seems to be what takes a boring game to a much better intensity level, but it could hurt us at some point. My theory is that these guys are so competitive, and used to going at each other hard in practice that it spills over into games.

I like a little “mean” in my team, as long as they don’t take it too far. So far they haven’t.

Random thoughts from the game last night:

We can survive an off shooting night against a team that shoots well. (Seriously, when’s the last time you saw a team bank in two threes in the same game?? BU hit a few circus shots.)

I really liked the aggressiveness from Skal and Alex.

Marcus Lee and Charles Matthews are all hustle and energy, all the time. I dig it.

I can’t believe that was only Alex’s fourth double double ever. Hopefully he continues the trend. When he’s engaged, I feel no fear of any team. Charles reminds me of Alex a lot. Athletic and fierce.

Matthews reminds me more of Lee. Needs to develop more offensively, and put on some weight, but lots of athleticism, hustle, and energy.

We can survive but I would rather not have to rely on other elements if we are ice cold from 3…Remember Wall and Co vs W. Virginia. Our free throws and deep game need to come up to our ability. We have several good 3 point shooters…several of them need to show up every game. The free-throw thing will shake itself out. The guards and Skal need to be 70%+. I have faith. I like our team.

Murray and Briscoe are hustlers too.

I think of Briscoe as being the player Archie was always trying to be.

Our free throw shooting right now depends on who is at the line. Alex and Tyler are consistently good. Others are shaky. I think Skal and Humphries will end up being good free throw shooters because both have a nice mid-range jumper. Murray is a good shooter, so he should figure it out.

Coach Cal told Briscoe that he can’t play him late in games if he doesn’t start hitting free throws. Briscoe wants to be in, and I think his drive will cause him to work out his free throws.

The team played a bit sloppy last night overall, but it’s early in the season and we’re young. We’ll get better as the season goes on.

I thought Derek Willis played pretty well last night too. He missed some shots, but he hustled and defended decently. He followed his own miss and put it back on one play, and stayed aggressive and was looking for his shot. Derek is making his case to get more minutes, and I think he’ll get at least a few minutes per game.

      10:39 am November 25, 2015 Permalink

The rebound and score on his own miss was awesome. Willis did miss several open shots and (as Mattt mentioned) with his average defense, he needs to be able to capitalize on the other aspects of his game to keep minutes. He was absolutely super all-around in this first two games. I look for Derek to be a major contributor in most games throughout the season.

If Derek just plays with confidence, the sky’s the limit.

Derek and Alex both need to realize how good they are. We all know, but they need to know.

I learned at a very early age that you don’t talk smack if you can’t back it up. I’m not saying squat until the game is over this week. We could be in a lot of trouble.

Whichever team can make the fewest stupid mistakes, and capitalize the most on the other team’s stupid mistakes will win.

I just hope we try to make a play downfield on 3rd and long. That would satisfy me either way. Or letting the QB be more effective on the ground. That would be nice to see. The most dangerous teams have dual-threat QB’s.

My wife and two daughters worshipped Willie last season. I was right ther with them…Willie was MIA during the Wisconsin game. That was the difference.

Not having ALex hurt us against Wisconsin. Alex can guard Dekker, but Dekker can’t guard Alex.

I am sick of hearing people dump on the twins. They led us through an epic March Madness run that no one expected, and then followed it up with an undefeated regular season. The loss last Spring was on Cal, several players and the refs, not the twins alone.

    • Laker Cat 18
      11:24 am November 25, 2015 Permalink

It would have been hard for me to go away from the twins since they basically carried us through the 2014 tournament. I agree with you to an extent, but I also believe Ulis is a better pure PG than Andrew.

    • Realme
      11:28 am November 25, 2015 Permalink

I would take sophomore Ulis over sophomore Andrew as my point guard for sure. But that doesn’t mean the twins deserve to be blamed for the one loss or hated. I can’t tell you how many times since this season started I have heard someone say they’re glad the twins are gone. WE PROBABLY WOULDN’T EVEN HAVE CAL RIGHT NOW IF THE TWINS HADN’T COME BACK. Not yelling at you Laker Cat. Just the people in real life I can’t yell at :).

Tyler Ulis can be good, and Andrew Harrison can also be good at the same time. It doesn’t have to be one or the other…

The loss is on Cal. Not Willie, not the twins.

Also, Wisonsin was a really good team last season. They were a legit top three team all season long. The loss hurt, but it’s not like we lost to some chumps that we had no business losing to.
