Kroger’s KSR Game of the Week: South Warren at Bowling Green

We are excited to have our friends at Kroger on board as we bring you high school football coverage this fall. Each week Kroger will present the KSR High School Game of the Week. We will travel to the featured game each week to bring you the best sights, sounds and incredible moments. Together we’re happy supporters of “KY Proud Products” and the “Kentucky Agricultural Development Fund.”

This week’s Kroger KSR Game of the Week is South Warren at Bowling Green. Here is a quick preview.

Series History

Bowling Green leads 3-2. South Warren came into existence in 2011 and they avoided playing Bowling Green until they were put in the same district and class in 2017. Bowling Green won the first ever matchup 43-7, before South Warren turned the tables for a 28-21 playoff victory less than a month later. The teams met once in 2018, with South Warren winning the regular season game 36-12 on their way to the 5A state title.

Last Year’s Games

UK freshman safety Vito Tisdale helped the Bowling Green Purples win both matchups last season, finishing with a combined 15 tackles in the two games.

October 4: Bowling Green won 14-3 on the road. Javeius Bunton ran for 86 yards and two scores and Rece Jones tallied 13 tallies for the Purples. They held South Warren to 187 total yards.

November 15: Bowling Green won 20-13 at home in the 2nd round of the 5A playoffs. Bunton rushed for 67 yards and a score and Jones led the team with 15 tackles. Kobe Martin rushed for 127 yards for the Spartans.

South Warren Spartans

  • KSR State Ranking:  No. 9
  • First Season:  2011
  • State Championships: 4A – 2015, 5A – 2018
  • Last Season:  Finished 10-2.  Lost to Bowling Green in 2nd round of 5A playoffs.
  • This Season:   Defeated Warren East 40-0.  Defeated Glasgow 36-0.

Key Players

Sr WR/S Jantzen Dunn – Dunn is the #4 senior in KY according to Rivals and a Mr. Football candidate. He has not played yet this season due to a quad strain and is doubtful for Friday. He committed to Ohio State in April, where he will play DB. He had offers from Alabama, Florida, Michigan, Texas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Louisville, among others.  Scored a touchdown in the Spartans’ win over Cov Cath in the 2018 5A state championship game.

Jr QB Caden Veltkamp – Velktamp, the No. 6 junior in KY according to Rivals, has an offer from UK. Last year he was 76-of-122 for 1,007 yards, 16 TDs and only 1 pick. He missed several games last year due to injury. His father, Jason Veltkamp, used to work for Bobby Petrino and is currently the strength and conditioning coach at WKU.

Jr RB Kobe Martin – Martin accounted for almost 60% of the Spartan’s rushing yards last season, finishing with 1,167 and 15 TDs on 217 carries.

Jr OL/DL Jake Jackson – Jackson led the team in sacks (8) and tackles for loss (23) last season and was 2nd in tackles (63).

Sr OL/DL Justin Boley – Boley finished with 55 tackles and 4 sacks last season.

Bowling Green Purples

  • KSR State Ranking:  No. 7
  • First Season:  1922
  • State Titles:  3A – 1995, 5A – 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016
  • Last Season:  Finished 9-4.  Lost 28-0 to Covington Catholic in 5A semifinals.
  • This Season:  Defeated #12 St. X 14-0.  Defeated PRP 24-6.

Key Players

Sr TE Jordan Dingle – Dingle is the #3 senior in KY according to Rivals and a Mr. Football candidate.He has an offer from UK and is one of their top remaining in-state targets. He also has offers from Ohio State, South Carolina, West Virginia, Tennessee, and Louisville, among others.  Last season he caught 35 passes for 474 yards and 5 TDs. KSR wrote about him back in August.

Sr LB Rece Jones – Jones was awesome on defense last year, leading the team with 158 tackles. He already has 20 tackles and two sacks this season.

Sr RB Javeius Bunton – Bunton led the team in rushing yards last season with 764. He finished with 10 TDs rushing and two receiving. He already has four rushing TDs this season.

Sr QB Conner Cooper – Cooper was 106-of-171 passing for 1,352 yards last season. He tossed 15 TDs and six picks.

Sr WR Dezmond Wilson – Wilson caught a team high 39 passes for 462 yards and five scores last season. He was hurt in the PRP game and might not be available to play Friday.

    Yeah……Trinity vs St X isn’t a big game at all. Certainly not compared to these two giants.
