2A Season Recap

Stop if you’ve heard it before; Mayfield is undefeated headed into the postseason. The Cardinals ran the table and beat foes McCracken County (6A) and Paducah Tilghman (4A) behind big seasons from Trajon Bright and Landon Arnett. The only other undefeated team is Lexington Christian. Dillion Wheatley ran for 1,264 yards and 20 touchdowns while Brayden Miller was 89/130 with only one pick for the Eagles in 2016. LCA took down Danville 42-40 in their only one possession win of 2016.

That same Danville team went 8-2 thanks to a huge season from quarterback Zach Dampier. The Ads appear to be back and better but have a rough road to Bowling Green. A matchup with 9-1 Leslie County in the second round and a potential game against LCA in the third round.

The top half of the bracket provides plenty of opportunities for great games. Mayfield, DeSales, Christian Academy of Louisville, Glasgow, and Owensboro Catholic all have two or fewer losses headed into the playoffs. Only one of those teams will make it to the title game in December. It will be a fun few weeks in the 2A bracket, here are some things to watch for in the division.

Game to Watch For- Mayfield vs DeSales- As the kids say, this game would be lit. Landon Arnett and Mayfield will be looking to defend their title, and DeSales would be hosting their first state semifinal game at home. The Cardinals beat DeSales in the semifinals last season behind 154 yards on the ground from Trajon Bright. The senior Bright has 1,079 yards in 2016 and would be one of the best backs DeSales has faced this year. But the Colts bring in one of the best defenses in the state. DeSales allows less than seven points a game and shut out six opponents in 2016. It would be a fun matchup if these teams were to meet in the semifinals.

Player to Watch- Zach Dampier, Danville- The senior QB has thrown only four picks compared to 31 touchdowns in 2016. Dampier is the top passer in 2A with 2,403 yards in ten games for the Admirals. Over the last two seasons, Dampier has 61 touchdowns and only nine interceptions while leading his team to a 20-2 record in the last two years.

Championship Prediction- Mayfield vs Danville- It’s not much of a surprise that Mayfield is favored to land back in the state title game. The Cardinals have won 12 state championships including 2016 over Newport Catholic. If these teams meet, their will be a lot of offensive firepower on both ends. It would come down to whose defense would step up. I think Mayfield’s one-two punch of Arnett and Bright would be too much for the Ads and Dampier would be left playing catch up late in the second half. Mayfield rolls to their 13th title and a 15-0 season.
