Kentucky’s two American Idol contestants sing “My Old Kentucky Home”

A couple of young Kentuckians survived the judges’ round on the new season of American Idol and soon they will be off to Hollywood to compete for the show’s record deal and cash prize.

Two of the early favorites among the show’s first auditions, Lancaster’s Alex Miller and Perryville’s Alyssa Wray are 30 minutes apart in neighboring Kentucky counties, and they got together to sing “My Old Kentucky Home” before they perform again for Hollywood Week on the show.

Hear the new Bluegrass collaboration from 18-year-old Alyssa from Boyle County and 17-year-old Alex from Garrard County:

Two young people from Kentucky, one a boy one a girl, one white one of color, singing My Old Kentucky Home together. You gotta love it! We’ll see this again in Rupp Arena or Commonwealth Field some day. But I have a more urgent idea. I say if Kentucky makes it to Sunday that we somehow get those two to Nashville to sing our state song at the SEC championship game!

Unless they get canceled for singing that song. I’m serious. Nothing is off limits now.

God knows the original lyrics would cause riots, congressional debate, talk show outrage, hissy fits from LeBrown, reparations, and celebrity apoplexy.

SC you got that right. How did we become so sensitive? It’s beyond ridiculous.

I should qualify what I said: I know there is at least one line of one verse (maybe more…forgive my memory) that all reasonable people would strongly object to, as I certainly do. However, even if it is not sung, that is not enough for people who would actually cancel Dr. Seuss.

The world has gone mad. Absolutely stark raving mad.

I say why bring that up? The song was written in 1852. The lyrics you referenced were long ago changed (Im 63 and I never recall those lyrics being used). If Alyssa is good with singing it then more power to her!

Well Dr. Seuss canceled Dr. Seuss, maybe go with JK Rowling or Pepé Le Pew.

BTW… I’m not seeing any NWA lyrics being revised and that’s fine. But it be what it be!

Hell I think it was B.I.G. had a song about assaulting an 8 year old. No one’s trying to cancel that.

Awww …that be art my brother! Straight up adulterated art my main man! I don’t know who gonna be set free by that truth, but it be what it be. There’s gonna come a time when all people gonna have to own what’s rightfully theirs white and black and that’s when the truth shall truly be setting folks free!

Loved it. Just two Kentucky bred country kids innocently singing our state song. Very deep societal message from those two that we all should take note of. Proud of them!!
