Playing in their first road game of the season, the 13/9th ranked Kentucky women’s basketball team watched a once 20 point lead dwindle down to two , but the Cats hung on to win 71-68. Senior Jennifer O’Neill led the way offensively with 19 points on five three-pointers followed by Makayla Epps with 12 and Linnae Harper with 10.
It wasn’t pretty, but it was a win, and a road win at that. The Cats are now 4-0 with a win over top-10 Baylor under their belt, and now an impressive victory of the predicted winners of the MAC on the road. CMU is a perennial mid-major power in women’s college basketball, and Coach Mitchell is sure to be happy to have his Cats tested early on. There is plenty of film to watch and plenty to improve upon and Kentucky will do just that as the season progresses.
These two teams faced each other in Lexington a year ago, and Kentucky ran away with the 22 point win. It looked to be more of the same this year as the Cats were able to build an 18 point lead at halftime, but then things fell apart. The Chips switched to a trapping 2-3 zone which rattled the rhythm of Kentucky’s offense, and CMU cut the lead all the way down to just two points before the Cats were able to seal the victory.
The Cats will gear up for a Thanksgiving weekend tournament in the Virgin Islands next week, as Kentucky will face up against Illinois on Turkey Day, followed by Oklahoma and South Florida on Friday and Saturday. Let’s all agree that we’re extremely jealous and would do anything to be in the Virgin Islands on the beach, or is that just me?
