Kentucky wasn’t even on Zion Williamson’s list of final four schools

Remember when recruiting analysts felt it was neck-and-neck between Kentucky and Clemson going into the home stretch of Zion Williamson’s recruitment?

Turns out, Kentucky wasn’t really in the running at all.

In an interview with Nikki Hood of TigerNet.com, Lee Anderson, Williamson’s step-father, said the big decision came down to four schools.

And Kentucky wasn’t one of them.

“As of last night, he still didn’t know where he wanted to go,” Anderson said. “Clemson, South Carolina, Duke, North Carolina, those are all schools that he seriously considered. He just had a hard time deciphering where he wanted to go.”

In fact, the decision came down to a flip of a coin between the final four schools.

“Zion woke up and he made a decision. That was all there was to it,” said Anderson. “Zion actually told me last night that he was going to flip a coin and go through four schools.”

Despite Williamson’s relationship with Drake, his best friend signed on to be Kentucky’s star point guard, and John Calipari making him a priority for almost two years, the Cats weren’t even seriously considered.

Unreal.

Why? It’s not like his chances of winning a NC are going to drop going to Duke. In fact I would say they will increase. And his one year of school credits are more valuable. It is what it is.

Sorry, I forgot I’m supposed to use rapper names when conversing with you. Lil code, glad to see you’re still stalking us. You say you come here for Louisville posts, but here you are on one that has nothing to do with your trashy school. It’s flattering and hilarious at the same time.

Why would we be obsessed with a trash school we own. 35-16 is not a rivalry. 8 titles to 2. Good luck with your crumbling programs Card. This will be the last Cards team to make the tournament for years. Would love to destroy you all again in March.

You are a Duke fan now?! I guess it makes since since Louisville will be awful after this years first round loss. SEC owns the ACC all around. 17National Titles in the last 12 years in baseball, basketball, football. ACC actually has the second most with 7 so it could be worse. Just shows how dominant the SEC is. Almost as dominant as UK is vs UL in basketball. 35-16, 8 > 2. Why are you still here? You do realize the rest of the ACC thinks Louisville is an embarrassment and wants to get rid of you right? Oh, and UK got an invite in 1994 from the ACC. Doubt you knew that, though. Louisville fans are too dumbed down to know history.

Kid sounds like a goober if this is true. Sets a date 2 weeks in advance of knowing where to go? Why? Instead if delaying to make sure he makes the best choice, he flips a coin? Why? This kid obviously just wants to get his mandatory year of college over so he can bolt. Looks like a year of bad chemistry may follow him.

    • syrin23

Tyler will have a FAR greater impact than Zion at the college level. Tyler is a basketball player first and athlete second. Zion dunks on people 5 inches shorter and 100 pounds lighter than him, and we are supposed to be impressed? That doesn’t work at the college level, and coach K has not shown he can develop freshman to be much better by the end of the year. Never. The Duke pro players don’t improve. Incredibly short sighted decision by someone who needs good coaching.

  11. KYjellyRoll
    5:34 pm January 21, 2018 Permalink

A lot of these top recruits decisions come down to coaches promises. Such as maybe coach K telling them they will run their offense off them, coach cal telling them they aren’t guaranteed playing time, they have to earn it. Maybe turns them away? Coach cal bein “real” they just can’t accept the fact they’d have to compete to play lol

    • Mathlete

If you have to have playing time guaranteed, you’re not tough enough for Cal to want to coach anyway

    • BlueDeuce
      5:50 pm January 21, 2018 Permalink

Cal doesn’t do that… he plays the kid with the highest draft potential. Didn’t matter of there is someone better at the time sitting on the bench. Cal plays the kids he can get to the NBA the fastest… period. If they have to earn it, explain Diallo’s playing time or Richards? Players first!

    • Mathlete
      6:01 pm January 21, 2018 Permalink

Who’s the next best guard behind Diallo? Brad. That’s why Hami plays so much. As for Richards, he’s thinking too much about it but has the skills and physical gifts to be very good

I think Cal is going to need to re-brand a bit…..can’t hang our hat on the “One and Done” mantra anymore, others are doing it better. Hell, we lose recruits to Oregon and Texas these days, much less Duke. Can’t fault any kid for choosing Duke, but he did seem to add himself to a very crowded 3-4 area ?? But we are going to need to market another facet of our program, other than “we’ll get you to the NBA in a year”……the guys we are starting to get are not of that ilk…….those guys are going to Duke…..similar to UK in 2012…….Duke is the hot spot now, but they can only accommodate so many players, and there is a LOT of talent out there…..as Cal said, we’ll be fine.

When I think about all of the things that truly differentiate UK from others, the multi-generational tradition and incredibly passionate fanbase are what I always come back to. No program can match those two assets……we should find a way to weave that in our recruiting a bit more. There is nothing on earth like UK basketball.

    • syrin23
      7:29 pm January 21, 2018 Permalink

I disagree. We can now look at how these one and dones did at their schools. Ben Simmons? Missed the tournament, can’t shoot. Bamba? Miss the tournament, hasn’t improved. How about Shabazz? Look at how these can’t miss players are doing in the NBA compared to UK players. THAT’S the selling point. They will lose MILLIONS at the next level by not getting a good second contract.

Sounds like Cal should run his team like a daycare so some of these big babies will come play for him. Or he can hire momma and daddy to his staff and move them on campus. Geesh, seriously?

  21. Rabbi Li

    1. RJ Barett & Cameron Reddish were the guys we wanted out of this class. So if you want to be butthurt then be my guest… but do it over them. Due to out logjam at the 4 I understand why we didn’t get them.

    2. Zion is popular for the same reason Hamidou Diallo was popular coming out of high school. Dunking on the break doesn’t make you the second coming of Charles Barkley. Zion’s weight is a difference for being effective (because he knows how to use it) but he is not “the answer.”

    3. I’d rather have a Sophmore PJ Washington, Knox, or Vanderbilt… than a Freshman Zion. The reason is I see the more upside in multi-year players for winning big games.

    4. I think Calipari should bring Orlando Antigua back as an assistant. Either he was a lucky charm or was more successful with top 20 recruits.

*Note: Additionally to point #3… Sacha Killeya-Jones is a forward as well and will be a Jr next season.

UK adding another Forward at the present time is really just bad timing. We’re stocked. Now we need to get these players disciplined.

We could have had Louis King a long time ago but he never offered waiting on players that just went else where. King is a McD’s AA. We could have used them. We need to get used to this. Its going to happen a lot more. Coach K took the 1 and done and perfected it. He takes these players and changes his style to fit the players that he takes on. This has been my knock on Cal from the start. He runs his same offense no matter which players he has. The 2 really great years he has had is when he has an amazing big man. (Davis and KAT) He still tries to just throw down to bigs non stop every possession and its frustrating. Richards may become that one day, but right now he is not. Its so frustrating watching him just stumble and throw the ball at the rim.
