After a 3-0 sweep against Michigan, the Kentucky volleyball team is on to the Sweet Sixteen.

This evening, the ninth-ranked Wildcats dominated against the Wolverines at Memorial Coliseum, taking home wins of 25-19, 25-19, and 25-20 to advance in the NCAA Tournament.

Here was the Kentucky match point and the ensuing celebration:

In the three-game sweep, Leah Edmond led the way with 15 kills to go with seven digs, a block solo, and two block assists. She finished hitting .375, scoring her 15 kills on just 32 swings.

Sophomore outside hitter Alli Stumler managed 11 kills on 33 swings, with senior grad transfer Leah Meyer adding six kills on nine attempts.

The Wildcats also outblocked the Wolverines, with Meyer tying her season high for single-match blocks with seven. Caitlyn Cooper and Kendyl Paris each added four and three blocks, respectively.

Gabby Curry also led the way with 19 digs and two assists in the match, while Madison Lilley managed 31 assists, two kills, six digs, and two blocks. Curry and Madison Lilley combined for 33 of UK’s 35 assists on the night.

Here is the official set-by-set breakdown, courtesy of UK Athletics:

Set One
After exchanging the first series of points, Kentucky went on a 6-0 run that put the first bit of separation between the Wildcats and the Wolverines at 12-5. Michigan burned an early timeout trailing 9-5 after a block from Alli Stumler and Madison Lilley brought Memorial Coliseum to its feet. Michigan rallied to win five of seven points and that pushed the Wildcats into their first timeout of the set leading by just a pair at 15-13.

Set Two
Michigan hit into back-to-back errors and the Wildcats took an 11-6 lead midway through the set to put Kentucky in control. After the Wolverines gained a little for a series of points, Leah Meyer had a solo block at the net for the seventh team block of the match for UK and the Wolverines needed to use their second timeout at 20-14, down half a dozen. For the second set in a row, Leah Edmond hammered home the winning point from the left side and Kentucky took the second set, 25-19 – the same score as the opening set.

Set Three
The third set was the tightest of the three in the match, with no team garnering more than a three-point lead until Kentucky went up 15-11 to send the match into the media timeout of the frame. The Wildcats had to defend the Wolverine charge in the middle portion of the second as UM pulled to within one point at 18-17 before Kentucky used a Leah Edmond and Meyer fueled run put the Wildcats up 21-18 and Kentucky saw out the match by winning five-straight points to conclude the match.

After the match, the Kentucky seniors shared an emotional moment out on the floor with the Memorial Coliseum crowd:

With the victory, Kentucky advances to the Sweet 16 for the third consecutive season, with the winner set to take on the winner of tonight’s (8) Washington vs. South Carolina match. From there, the highest-seeded team in Kentucky’s quadrant will host the regional.

Go Cats.

We sure are going to miss them 4ever! This group has really took it to another level. The last few classes have just been better than the last and we’ve got some great youngsters too, but these Seniors are all world good. I wish I could’ve went but half a day work and then had to watch some games. Lol. Anyway, all our girls teams are doing awesome and the basketball girls are as fun to watch as any I’ve seen here. I love their style of play and when they need a basket, They’re loaded: anyway, it was a awesome day for sports today and the Football Cats were the only thing missing. Maybe next year. If not next year, it will be in the next three I honestly believe. You have a good day My brother. Got to Grout a backsplash this morning and I’ll see you Cats later.

You are correct Jasun, we are for sure going to miss those seniors, I watched each of them step up and make big plays every time Michigan made a run at them and it was so much fun to watch. Love your enthusiasm and wish more fans were like you, too many negative Nellies, at least on this site.
