Kentucky taking another look at Devonta Pollard?

Remember Devonta Pollard? Two years ago, Kentucky recruited Pollard, a five-star small forward, but he chose to sign with Alabama. A year ago, Pollard’s mother, Jessie Mae Brown Pollard, was arrested and charged with kidnapping a six-year-old child. Although his involvement was peripheral, Pollard himself was charged with conspiracy to commit kidnapping, and transferred to East Mississippi Community College. After a long, hard year in which he had to testify against his mother to avoid prosecution, Pollard is trying to start anew. One of the schools interested is Kentucky. From The Clarion-Ledger:

Missouri, Kentucky and Troy are three schools after the talented forward, but Pollard hasn’t set up visits with any schools. White says he met with Pollard last week and talked recruiting, but that it’s anyone’s guess to where he ends up.

At Alabama, Pollard struggled, only averaging 3.9 points and 3.1 rebounds. At EMCC, he averaged 12 points and 6.4 rebounds a game, while shooting 59% from the field. His game needs work, but the potential is there. As the roster continues to shake out over the next few weeks, this may be something to keep an eye on. Pollard has until May 21st to decide.

I agree — we don’t know what the story is.

Here’s what happened: Pollard’s mother, Jesse Mae Pollard, had a piece of land foreclosed upon. Her cousin, Roshell Ford, bought the land and a portable shed that was on the property. Jesse Mae wanted the land back, and in an effort to prove a point she kidnapped Ford’s six-year old daughter from her elementary school, taking her to a motel and texting Ford “don’t call the police I will call you later if you call the police u won’t see her again.”

Devonta Pollard’s involvement was peripheral, as prosecutors said that he simply picked up a cousin when her car broke down and drove her to the hotel that his mother was staying at. Devonta even testified against his mother, receiving two years of supervised release. His record will be wiped clean if he doesn’t get in any trouble during that time. Jesse Mae was given a 25-year prison sentence, while the other five people involved in the kidnapping were sentenced to between eight months and a year in prison.

Sounds like he just got caught up in something crazy his mom did, I could understand that type of conflict. It’s an understandable, albeit regrettable, mistake and everyone deserves a second chance.

If we’re looking at him (or his camp isn’t just using UK for attention), then I trust Cal to know if he can work with him. I’d guess he’s being considered on the chance both Young and Poythress go pro so that we’ll have a little experience on the wing.

All of ya’ll saying absolutely not are only going by what the media has said. Why is it that we decry the media when it talks about our guys, and yet so many of you buy whatever it says about other teams’ players? He may have a bad mother, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t become a good person himself.

And if you’re worried we’ll get bad press, come on now, we already do. So what if they get something else to write about. Ignore the haters.

Tyler Thompson could post on this site that Alex Hribal, the Pennsylvania school stabber, was interested in UK, and shoots 39% from deep, and 30 of you guys would respond how we don’t need this alleged murderer on our team, and that Calipari has sank to a new low in recruiting the kid.
In other words. because some yahoo on KSR writes it, doesn’t mean it’s true! UK doesn’t take kids like Pollard, doesn’t have to take kids like Pollard. We’ll leave that to the school on Floyd street. Calm down.

So quick to pass judgement. Check the background out for yourself. I’ve not seen anywhere that he was the one committing a crime. Who are you to judge a kid based on the mistakes if a parent? He has potential. I don’t know him personally anymore than those who are quick to judge the young man, but I trust that Coach Cal knows what he is doing.

We know absolutely nothing about this case! What if the mom thought she was taking the kid from a dangerous environment! It’s illegal, but that doesn’t make her a horrible person! Criminal, yes if she was wrong… A hero otherwise. And what 18 or 19 year old son wouldn’t walk thru hell to save his mom! Everything I’ve ever heard about this kid since he was in High School was that he was a great kid. Terrible situation, but which would be worse? To take a kid from what you perceive to be a dangerous parent or to look the other way. Like I said, we don’t know the whole story! We should trust Cal’s judgement. He’s earned that privilege.

Learn how to read. His mother kidnapped a child. He did not. Police leaned on him to get him to testify against his mother. You have no idea if that means he went along with it or if that means the police needed a witness and could place him at the hotel because he dropped a cousin off. The kid was willing to testify against his own mother which says to me that he understands she was in the wrong and given an absence of any shred of proof or evidence that he knowingly involved himself in a kidnapping, the reaction of all of you to call him a criminal or a thug or a kidnapper even is beyond absurd. All of you should be ashamed of yourselves.

Gotta assume the ppl saying we should take him and let cal judge hime are lville trolls. We do not need this kid, as a player or as a student. If louisville was looking at this kid then wed be saying oh look another convict for the dirty birds. I believe in 2nd chances and he will likely get one somewhere else, but not here. You can say well he was DIRECTLY involved into it idc the fact is he was involved in some way shape or form. If you fans really want him then get ready for the pot calling kettle black outlash from tard fans

Your assumption would be wrong because I am no way shape nor form of any kind of Louisvilledom. That being said I do trust that our coach can make an informed decision as to who we should bring to our program….In Cal We Trust….with our UK basketball!!!! .

Or we’re good hearted people that don’t confuse a kid’s mother’s Crimea with the kid himself. It doesn’t take a troll to give Cal the chance to address what’s best for his team given he knows more about any kid he signs than you know about your own ass crack.

I agree this kid needs to be in card nation, garbage, thug land where he can do dirt over and over again and get second and third chances like slick rick, steve masello, chane behanen, kevin ware, should I go on? one of these times the louisvelle program is going to get into some $hit that uncle tom juric cant even wash it away! and this kid could be the one. this guy would help rick hold the legs over his next victims head while rick goes for a record of 20 seconds. (RICK THE RABBIT) so go get him rick he will fit right in that dirty program!!

Christians aren’t to judge that people are hell bound. Judgements of character are entirely okay within a Christian framework. Incidentally there’s nothing like someone judging someone for judging. Irony much?

    • Do whut?
      7:56 am April 17, 2014 Permalink

To be more accurate Christians aren’t to judge other Christians hypocritically and should a Christian tell someone he is bound for hell it should be on the basis of biblical truth. Nonetheless it is fallacious to say a Christian should not judge.

This non story was thrown out by KSR to get hits on the website. Guess what it worked. There is no way the UK Wildcats would have discussed with anyone an interest in Devonta Pollard. Oh sure, maybe Pollard threw it out to the Clarion Ledger but that is it. We are UK. We do not need a Pollard. We select who we want and there is no way a player who can only contribute 3.9 and 3.1 at Bama can help us. Forget about his personal baggage. He is not a championship player and there are a 100 out there better.
