Kentucky men’s soccer advances to second round of NCAA Tournament

The Kentucky men’s soccer team is one step closer to the 2019 College Cup.

On Thursday evening, the Wildcats took home a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Crossfire Premier Soccer Club at the Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex in Lexington.

Failing to attempt a single shot in the opening half, the Wildcats trailed the Ramblers 1-0 for nearly 46 minutes before UK sophomore Jason Reyes drilled a penalty kick in the 82nd minute to tie the game 1-1.

After coming up empty in the first overtime, the Wildcats would come out on top in the second with the help of Kentucky freshman Eythor Bjorgolfsson. Just 56 seconds in, sophomore right back Robert Screen came up on the far sideline, shot the ball across the field to an open Bjorgolfsson, who connected on a diving header for the golden goal.

“I just needed a cross,” Bjorgolfsson said of the game-winner, via UK Athletics. “I felt confident that I would head it in.”

Here was the Kentucky freshman’s dagger to send the Wildcats on to the next round:

Here are all the match highlights:

Despite zero first-half attempts, Kentucky ultimately outshot Loyola Chicago 12-6 overall and 7-1 on goal.

With the massive victory, the Wildcats (13-4-3, 4-2-1 Conference USA) advance to a second-round matchup at No. 5 seed Indiana (14-2-4, 7-1 Big Ten Conference) on Sunday at noon ET, televised live on the Big Ten Network. Loyola Chicago ends its season at 11-5-4 (5-2-3 Missouri Valley Conference).

The Wildcats took on the Hoosiers in Bloomington back on Oct. 9, with the game ending in a scoreless draw. Indiana took home the program’s 14th Big Ten Tournament crown after winning a 4-3 penalty kick shootout in a 0-0 tie with Michigan on Nov. 17.

We’ll see you in Bloomington.
