Kentucky legend Wah Wah Jones has passed away

WahWah

Some sad news today: UK legend Wallace “Wah Wah” Jones has passed away at the age of 88. Jones was an All-American under both Adolph Rupp and Bear Bryant, an Olympic gold medalist, and is the only University of Kentucky athlete to have his jersey retired for both basketball and football.

Coach Cal shared his condolences on Twitter:

Rest in peace, Wah Wah. You will be greatly missed.

I remember the greatest generation sitting around and saying Wah Wah was a Kentuckian’s Kentuckian. He was a team player who gave maximum effort every play, every game, regardless of the Sport. God Bless….

Though his body was bent with age, he was still out on that stage. He is now young again, running like the wind and playing the game he loved and loves.

I met ALL of the Fabulous Five, but I knew Ralph Beard best.
This was the first UK that I really followed as a 12 year old boy.
They (Beard, Groza, Rollins, Barker and Jones) are all in Big Blue Heaven now…
I am saddened, but take pride in remembering one of the greatest Wildcat teams of all time.
    R.I.P. Wah, Wah,

Thanks for sharing. They must have seemed larger than life at that time, when the war had just ended and they brought so much pride to Kentucky.

Made me tear up, Ron. Coach Rupp has all his boys up there now. We can even dominate heaven basketball now.

As nice a person as you’d ever meet, and as accomplished an athlete as UK has had. He was truly special and will be missed by many.

Mr. Jones….R.I.P…..without you playing here UK wouldn’t have the tradition that it has as many before you and after you but you are a legend here in Kentucky and may you win many championships in heaven.

Why did they call him Wah Wah, did he complain about every foul call?

His little sister couldn’t say Wallace when she was little.

Jones got the nickname from a younger sibling (can’t remember if brother or sister) -as they had a hard time pronouncing his given name, Wallace.

One of my best and dearest friends in school, Morton, Henry Clay, was Vicki Jones. I hung at her house or she mine for many years. I knew Her mom and dad and of course Wah Wah is her daddy. It is with great sadness that I hear of his passing today. I spoke with Vicki earlier and although she is so very sad, she knows that he is now dancing with her mother. May that wonderful husband, father, and true UK legend R.I.P.

Mr. Jones was also sheriff of Fayette County and my father had the pleasure of working for him there. Dad always said he was the best boss he ever had.

The guy is only worth writing TWO sentences about? I find that odd. Could’ve at least wrote a couple paragraphs for the UK legend.
