Kentucky DB coach Steve Clinkscale reportedly being considered for position at Michigan

One of Kentucky Football’s star recruiters is a candidate to take a new job.

According to Nick Baumgardner of The Athletic, Wildcats defensive backs coach, Steve Clinkscale, is reportedly being considered to replace former Michigan co-defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach, Maurice Linguist, for the same position with the Wolverines.

Since joining Mark Stoops’ staff back in 2016, Clinkscale has established himself as an excellent recruiter and one who has brought in several high-profile prospects since his arrival. Just to name a few, he’s credited with successfully being able to bring in players such as Justin Rogers, the Wade twins, Marquan McCall, Yusuf Corker, Jeremy Flax, and many, many more. It’s easier just to sift through his page on 247 Sports of his all-time recruits, which is loaded with 4-star talent.

Clinkscale has been critical for Kentucky’s recent boom in recruiting success and losing him to Michigan would be a significant blow to the program.

It was only going to be a matter of time though before Clinks’ name began to surface for new jobs at big-time schools. Not only is he an ace recruiter, but he’s incredible with player development and the results speak for themselves. UK has ranked in the top four of the Southeastern Conference in pass defense three straight seasons, including leading the league in both 2019 and 2020, behind Clinkscale’s leadership.

Now someone please offer Clink a raise and keep him in Lexington.

Harbaugh won’t be there much longer. But it’s a step up so once Jim gets fired he would move on probably searching to land as a defensive coordinator.

    He should take the job.

Why would he want that job? Michigan may be a bigger name brand in football but they’re not a better program at the moment. In fact they’re one more subpar season from a house cleaning. Add in the fact if he gets worse results as a co-DC/Secondary coach in a weaker conference, that would take some shine off him. He’s a great coach, but the biggest reason Michigan wants him is because he kicking their ass in their own backyard. It’s be a short sighted move to go. Hope he gets a raise and keeps kicking Michigan’s ass!

Considering?! The way he’s been recruiting up there, I’d say they’re practically begging him….

Not a wise move. Harbaugh won’t last long. He will get fired eventually and a new coach will come in so that’s probably not the best spot.

But he has co-defensive coordinator on his resume at that point and could move onto another program as a defensive coordinator. He won’t have that opportunity staying at KY.

Sure he could. Why isn’t he a prime candidate to be our next DC? Make him co-defensive coordinator right now and match them. Our staff isn’t about to get fired. Theirs is

TBW but he’s getting that change now to be a DC and not with KY. The only thing that would make sense for him to stay is if he’s made co-DC and UK matches or pays more than Mich.

So many of these big recruits we’ve gotten lately have mentioned Coach Clink. Toss them.bagd at him. We have a good thing going.

I hope Stoops does what he can to keep him. He’s been a big part of the rebuilding process here.

1000% pay him whatever it takes… This is our next Defensive Coordinator as soon as White gets a Head Coaching Job somewhere in a couple year.,, That or White takes a Job in the League. Either way we must keep him and this staff together.. This is the best Staff we’ve had here in the last 45 or more years and Steve is a Huge part of it.. I blame no man for bettering his life but he’s loved and wanted here in Kentucky and We just can’t lose him without a fight, he’s just too important to this program and our future.. Warp this up Coach and keep this man. lol Go Cats. Sure would it be nice to be wanted by these big time collage programs. haha

Sumrall was just recently promoted to Co-DC. Although Clink has been a DC in the past, not sure he’s being considered by UK to be in this position given Sumrall being promoted ahead.

If I’m not mistaken we just gave him a raise this off season. Hopefully that may help since he got a raise before he got an offer, very good coach both recruiting and on field

It’s time this university stepped up and came close to what the other top programs in the SEC pay their assistant coaches and position coaches. Not wait until so other program comes in and tries to poach them.

Since we started winning bowl games and continuously bringing in more and better talent no one has left to take the same position elsewhere that we didn’t want to go. They will pay him and he will stay bc he knows they’re building something special in Lexington that he’s been a big part of and winning just feels way better in the SEC.

Maybe in the past UM would be the more high profile job but this UK program is on the rise and the better opportunities for the future are currently in Lexington! Go Cats! Keep Clink!

It might be an even better deal if Harbaugh got fired bc w a multi-year deal, the buyout would be gravy. He could get a salary elsewhere AND a buyout. Harbaugh may even be bringing in guys to structure contracts so it’s either more expensive to fire him or less attractive to a successor (who must already be short listed) bc either dollars are tied up in buyouts or his hands are tied in hiring staff by keeping the old guys latest hires. I don’t put it past Harbaugh to have less than pure motives, and if it saves a few recruits in the meantime, bonus.

It’s possible you have put too much thought into this. Most successful people do not purposely plan to take a job only to get another job.

This will probably boil down to whether or not he wants to be here or move on. Kentucky will pay him, but sometimes people want a new challenge or a change. I would say we will know soon. Hope he stays.

Found this on the FSU site. We pay more than FSU, so would be second in ACC, but we are barely 8th in the SEC. https://floridastate.rivals.com/news/fsu-football-salaries-rank-high-in-acc-but-lag-behind-clemson-sec-big-ten/printable

Gotta make a serious run at keeping him, we are finally able to compete and sometimes win against the top half of what might as well be the 7th division of the NFL, hands down the best football conference. Maybe we can’t but we have the fan support, the boosters and all the ingredients it takes, the only thing Kentucky doesn’t have is the high school pool of 4 and 5 stars which makes this all the more critical, that’s not a ding on HS football here it’s just reality.

We have no pro teams in Kentucky this is our team, the money is there and they better offer it, but if he decides to move on to other challenges or adventures, we should be ok with that he has helped UK football tremendously. I hope he stays but life is about what is best for you and your family so he needs to make the decision best for them, not us. God speed in your decision Clink.
