Not sure talking about basketball is going to help much. Maybe a good bourbon and a nap on that couch?

I’m with Clutch. Let’s talk about football instead. All of the media types keep insisting that Hoak has the upper hand in the QB battle, because he knows the playbook, system, etc. But it doesn’t feel that way to me. Feels like Terry will have it locked up easily. He just has that presence and I think Gunnar would have shown something by now… Thoughts?

    • ClutchCargo
      10:13 am February 15, 2018 Permalink

I can’t imagine they would go get the best Juco QB just to sit the bench. Also, and I have no idea what goes on behind the scenes, Terry seems to have embraced the leadership role that your starting QB needs to have. Not sure that is the case with Hoak, or at least we never hear anything about it.

    • BAT CATS!!!

    • One quick football comment: it does seem TD Terry waltzed right in like he knew he would start, talking about meeting with the receivers and such (didn’t he even say “my receivers” once? Not sure). If Gunnar wants it, he’s got to act like the big dog and battle like that. If he does, they push each other, and hopefully it’s a win-win for the teams as long as no one sulks.

I would say Terry TD waltzed right in like he expects to start. But yeah, I agree.

I’m sure Terry will have to earn it, but it seems like he’s already putting in the work to do that. Hoak has already had a couple of years, and couldn’t beat out Stephen Johnson (that’s my QB) or a gimpy Drew Barker. I don’t have a ton of faith that Hoak is the guy. Also, the rest of our personnel is set up for a rushing option style QB, which Hoak is not.

Ok i have to vent a little, Knox had 19 points at the 15 minute mark in the second half and we stopped going to him, WHY. Also with 3:47 to go in the game Cal takes Knox out and he comes back in with like 1:40 to go and the game is over. Thought we played a good game up till the last 4 mins.

Know disappeared in the second half, even when he was in the game. (Which is probably why Cal sat him.) Knox stopped being aggressive and looking to score.

      11:11 am February 15, 2018 Permalink

Auburn did a better job extending their D on him and face guarding him from time to time. However, a great offensive player will find a way to get open or you’d at least hope for plays to be drawn up that get him free. I was confused down 4 with under 4 minutes to go as to why Cal didn’t burn one of his time outs to settle his team down and get Knox into the game to create space and pose a threat during what I saw to be the biggest possession of the game. He was late closing out on D a few possessions prior to coming out, but they switched to zone and other’s were having the same issue. IDK, whatever.

Our half court offense is absolutely horrendous. Our out of bounds plays are absolutely horrendous. I have zero faith in the 2nd half of ball games. Our hustle guys can’t score and our scorers won’t hustle. Unless something changes, the end of this season will be the meltdown we were discussing on the show thread on Monday. I’m sticking to my 19-14 prediction through the SEC tournament. I haven’t seen anything coaching-wise or player-wise to persuade me otherwise.

Cal definitely didn’t coach a great game last night. I think he still wants them to grow up, play through mistakes and make things happen on their own. This team is not gonna do that.

    • ClutchCargo

Like all great coaches, Cal isn’t going to change what has worked well enough to make him a hall of fame coach. I do think something has to give, though. On the other hand, since this is clearly not a bunch of one and dones, this is what it looks like to start from scratch with multi-year players in the 2017 class.

Oh it’s amazing how many “adults” come to this site to bash kids and cry about not winning a basketball game. Just bc these kids aren’t living up to expectations others put on them, people on here call them “garbage” and say they suck. If you’re a grown adult who is bashing a kid/calling them names for not playing basketball the way you want them to, you need to get a life and find other things to get enjoyment from.

We are allowed to have a sub-par season every once in a while. We lost our entire starting five from last season, and most of our back-ups. I expected us to have a rough season for that reason, just didn’t think it would be this rough. Either way, still team Cal.

Another thing: I think I will scream the next time I see one of those idiots refer to a UK basketball player as a “fraud.” They did it with Skal, and we’re seeing it again with Diallo. Issel vs. Davis (each in their prime). Issel said the stats speak for themselves.

    • J-Dub421
      11:48 am February 15, 2018 Permalink

My money would be on Davis, but Issel was a great player for sure.

    • After Jodie Meeks broke his single game UK record, Issel also joked that there was no 3 pointer when he played.

    • Funny thing is, in Issel’s day they really didn’t play defense like they do now. That’s one reason (in addition to Rupp’s “Runnin’ Gunnin” style) why UK would score 90 or 100 regularly without a shot clock or a 3 point shot.

It’s weird. On the one hand it seems that in college bball they let guys get away with karate defense today, but they also call a lot of fouls.

    PG Vanderbilt(can dribble and pass)
    SG Knox(can shoot)
    SF Gabriel(can shoot)
    PF Washington(can post up)
    C Richards(tall)

Try scoring on this lineup. Current stats 185th on shots per game at 58 shots per game. Guard your man basketball and shoot it if you are open or taller than your defender. Pretty Simple

They are good players, but Vandy can see the floor, dribble and pass. If you watch him push the ball up the floor he creates open shots. We have a great team, but just need to think outside of the box and get shots off(185th in shots per game is not going to cut it)

Vandy may be one of the best ball handlers at 6 9 that we have ever had. Knox and Wenyen can get a 3 off whenever they want to with their height.

We laughed when Pitino took Louisville down.
Now, we watch Cal, hoping he brings us back.

    Nervous anyone? Don’t be.

This program was winning games and championships long before Cal got here. This program is not about Cal. Unfortunately for Cal he is obviously not about UK and its fans.

There are fans that like to sit in the lower arena, that do spend the big dollars, that expect to see wins for the money they provide to the program. That my friends, has more impact than anyone cheering for the Cats to win. That is the way it will always be.

Coaches that start turning in 10 loss seasons, do not last very long around UK.

Cal can say whatever he wants, “it is about the kids”, etc., But he knows, this is UK, it is about winning and championships.

If these so called fans who support Cal and his vision, continue to defend his system, This is what you get. It will not be too much longer before the big donors close off the money. All of your blind faith takes a bow to the blueblood money.

Cal will stay, as long as the big donors allow him to stay. They donate to the program, they pay for most everything. The number of losses a team has during the season does not get the coach fired, the number of empty seats, typically filled by large donars, is what gets you fired.

When that happens, The AD earns his money.

“Unfortunately for Cal he is obviously not about UK and its fans.” Unfair and untrue. Being for his players and being for UK are both qualities Cal demonstrates. They are not mutually exclusive, as Cal has proven time and again.

      12:29 pm February 15, 2018 Permalink

The big money donors who are sitting in the lower area are certainly a key part of UK’s success, but so are the thousands of regular fans. I have no problem with those folks choosing to sit quietly in their seats during a game, but we also need to find a way to get some excitement in the place and make it look better on national television. Believe it or not, but that can have an effect on a player’s decision to come here. The program needs to have a sense of excitement to be considered a “cool” program. With the subpar year and the at times apathetic crowds, UK’S image has taken a bit of a hit this year.
