Kentucky Baseball Reels In National Notoriety

The national spotlight is shining down upon the BatCats after a big weekend. Kentucky rose as high as #3 in the top 25 this week after their series win over top-five ranked Texas Tech. The Cats are in the top four in every major poll in the country, with Perfect Game ranking UK at #3.

UK went 3-2 last week, but the series win over #3 Texas Tech bumped the Cats into the top five. Many national pundits believe that UK is a bonafide championship contender after this weekend. The rankings show that the Cats have caught the eye of the national media. UK will have a chance to rise in the rankings once again this weekend when they take on #5 Arkansas this weekend in Fayetteville for their second consecutive weekend against a top-five team.

Troy Squires led the charge for UK’s offense this weekend. The senior catcher won SEC Player of the Week after going 12/21 with five doubles, two home runs, and 11 RBIs in five games. Squires set the tone on offense with a three-run home to take the lead on Saturday against Texas Tech. His two home runs this week were the second and third home runs of his UK career. Squires is the second consecutive UK winner after Luke Heyer brought in the award last week.

Kentucky’s midweek game this week has been canceled due to weather, but the Cats will be back in action this weekend against Arkansas.

awesome watching baseball success! With growing interest…can someone (similar to Freddie) do a breakdown of lingo. … I have watched a few games but know nothing about the sport other than these guys are good. Ex. what does 12/21 for five doubles mean? Sounds impressive

12 hits in 21 at bats includes the 5 doubles. Walks don’t count as official at bats.

runninggunnin I was worried about that. I am not being sarcastic. The idea of KSR expanding the fan base to other sports ( other than football and basketball) is important to the university. Example: UK track got a star that ran in the olympics. The idea of expanding the knowledge of the fan base ..in this case… MEEEE…. to learning more about baseball could be the difference in…lets say 30 ticket sales… Just sayin.
