Kole Cottam’s grand slam changed the season for Nick Mingione’s Kentucky baseball team. The blast over the left field wall propelled Kentucky to a series victory that has the Cats sitting pretty down the stretch.
Entering the weekend, Florida stood atop the SEC. Alabama was at the bottom, and the rest were within one game of each other. Kentucky and Missouri were in that group, tied with eight wins apiece.
Kentucky could not get the sweep, but the series win gave the Bat Cats a slight edge and all but secured an SEC Tournament berth.
Only the league’s Top 12 teams make it to Hoover. Two of the last three series are against the No. 13 (Tennessee) and No. 12 (Miss. State) teams. If they can keep the momentum rolling down to Knoxville next weekend, a team who has struggled with a coaching change will be poised for a sweep the following weekend in the final three games at The Cliff.
A lot can happen in the SEC standings with nine games to go on the conference schedule, but today’s dramatic win was exactly what Kentucky needed to gain momentum just before the postseason.
