Justin Rogers’ recruitment takes a hard left turn

Kentucky had all the momentum in the world in the recruitment of a five-star All-American…until Nick Saban called.

Justin Rogers, the No. 10 overall player in America according to Rivals, trimmed his list of schools to five yesterday and announced a decision date of May 20. Kentucky not only made the cut, they looked like the team to beat following an official visit to Lexington.

Along with the Cats, Rogers included his home state of Michigan, LSU, Tennessee and Georgia, where he will officially visit this weekend. Nick Saban was not happy to hear Alabama got left off the list. A day later he gave Rogers a personal pitch.

To land the top-ranked recruit of the Mark Stoops era, it was going to be a dog-fight. That fight just got a lot tougher with ten days to go.

You act like this is a big surprise? Why? When you compete against the big dogs you have to recruit against the big dogs, especially for 4- and 5-star players. No major headline here. And no big surprise.

It was going to happen sooner or later. Might as well happen before he commits, hoepfully meaning that a commitment would actually stick

He cut the Tide for a reason. Now all of a sudden he puts them on the list after a new conversation. He didn’t care Sabin called he cared about the amount Sabin said.

I could be wrong about this but I’m pretty sure Bama wasn’t really recruiting him before Saban called yesterday. To me it feels more like Cal visiting Juzang and he immediately reclassifies and visits UK because of the name of the school and the coach, not because of the “resources”.

Alabama is the Duke of football. They’ve had players admit to getting benefits(Duke hasn’t but we know), had been able to play for championships when several teams had better resumes(Duke getting 1-2 seeds when they should have been a 4), and have been handed games by the refs while the announcers act like they have no clue what you’re talking about (Duke tourney run or their obsessive compulsive flopping disorder).

Several dUKe players have come out and admitted to receiving benefits, the media just keeps those stories so very quiet…
Corey Maggette and Elton Brand anyone!

To go behind the other 10 NFL players waiting in line to play…must be nice to have so many openings to hoard players.

Nothing has changed in his recruitment. Wth are y’all smokin? He’s a 5 star recruit. You know Bama was going to offer at some point or you’re just not that into football.

…a hard left would be dropping UK and adding Duke football to make it 6.

What does he gain by coming to UK? The football program is mediocre, the education is worse. UK is ranked #147 in National Universities by US News and World Report’s annual college rankings.

Playing time, being the man not just another player, less fishbowl environment … lots of reasons beyond connecting with a coaching staff… Uk is in the sec, nfl argument means nothing lol….

    • The fact that we’ve had one of the best O lines in the SEC the last couple years, and the best at times. See how badly they beat up the supposedly most physical team ever in Mississippi State.

Those ratings are meaningless. The “elite” Ivy League schools have massive grade inflation and teach “wokeness” more akin to indoctrination than actual education. real employers out in the world take students from wake Forest before Ivy League schools. Every one of those rankings have an agenda. besides, a motivated student can get a good education ANYWHERE if they are willing to work for it.

It’s football recruiting, nothing really matters until they actually step on campus. MI, GA, Bama, you really think we were going to get this kid? The stars align and we win 10 games and these delusional fans think we’re a top 10 football school now. This season will be really rough on a lot of these fans.

We are in the mix for a 5 star elite lineman. That wasn’t true 5 years ago. We may not get him, we may yet get him, but at least we’re in the conversation. But now we know how the teams not named Duke and UNC feel when Cal goes to see a kid they’ve been on for 3 years and gets him. Sucks. But u want to be the beat u gotta beat the best and it starts w recruiting. At least this wasn’t a 3 star we found and they came in at the end, bc this guy has been no secret.

And btw, high school seniors are funny. I had one last year, they hv a mind of their own and choose places bc it feels right to them, not us. Me, I couldn’t decide bt Duke and Vandy undergrad so I went to Virginia. Irritated everyone. But I had friends there and I just liked the feel… he’s got friends here, and he may just like it. I’d rather go to school in Lexington than Tuscaloosa… Athens a little tougher call, but u never know. Hotel room sucks, someone is an ass to u at bfast, u just hv a bad day and u pull the pin and go elsewhere. Let’s not man the lifeboats just yet.

And if this kid goes to Alabama, then sits for two years before getting his chance to play then is replaced by yet another five star recruit, hopefully we can use that to motivate these kids to come here. You want to go someplace like UK ideally. A good team where you can get playing time, and the team will get national attention. Go to Bama and you are an interchangeable piece. Go to Indiana, and no one notices you. Plus, how many assistants does Saban lose every year?

It’s a top 10 kid. Of course programs like Alabama will come calling. But it’s not necessarily over. Sure, Alabama is awesome, but they also are a Johnny-Come-Lately. Sometimes building the relationship is what really matters. It ain’t over.
