John Petty now down to two schools, will decide by November

Many thought five-star shooting guard John Petty would be the first recruit to commit to Kentucky in the 2017 class, and according to today’s news, he still could be.’s Daniel Boyette is reporting that Petty is officially down to Kentucky and Alabama, eliminating UConn, Kansas, and Florida State from consideration, and plans to announce his decision by November.

John Petty
Shooting Guard/Small Forward | 6-7 | 180 lbs.
Huntsville, AL | J.O. Johnson
AAU: Team Penny
ESPN No. 25 | 7 SG Top247 No. 28 | 7 SF
Rivals No. 30 | – SG Scout No. 44 | 9 SG

Petty, considered a top ten shooting guard in the class, took an official visit to Alabama on August 25, and will take his official to Kentucky on October 28. He originally planned to announce in December, but moved up his timeline to sign “by November” to be part of the early signing period.

Avery Johnson’s been doing his best to get Petty to stay home and be a hero, but announcing right after you visit Kentucky? Sounds like a good sign for the Cats to me. (Plus, you know, Kentucky.)

Not that most of the elephant fans would care, but it would be kind of satisfying to exact some payback by swiping a prized basketball recruit out from under them. A little retribution for snagging Harris. I would be good with that.

I’m always a little wary of these guys who are five star on some rankings but not others. Are they assuming they’ll be one-and-dones? Are they prepared to stay 2, 3, 4 years? Not every 4.5 star is a Devin Booker.
