John Nabors comes on to discuss Malik Monk (Thursday Show Thread)

Yesterday, Malik Monk signed with Kentucky over home state Arkansas, a decision that did NOT sit well with many in Razorbacks land. Arkansas radio host John Nebors will come on the show to discuss it all and give us some insight into his cohost Mike Irwin’s blistering rant about Monk and Calipari yesterday.

Is the game tomorrow night at 7:30? I have a schedule but every game says TBA.

I really hope people show up Saturday even though it could be a blowout and is going to be cold and snow.

Taking my girls and their cousin to the game tomorrow night. Totally jacked up about watching these young Cats in person after the big win Tuesday! Hopefully, there won’t be too much of a hangover after the win.

Since this tool brought up APR, do you think he knows that UK basketball has had a higher APR than Arkansas basketball even with all our one and done?

Funny how Matt never mentions that he used to say the same exact negative comments about Cal before he came to UK! Now we embrace him. Much like we would be embracing Petrino if he would have brought a winning football program here

It’s funny you mention that because right before 10:30, when I stopped listening bc I went into the Dr office, he literally said just that. He hated cal. But it was because he wanted him here, because he was a winner. If your dumbass was paying attention instead of trying to skirt the subject, you would have heard that.

“we” embrace him. Lol. Has cats douche ever said one positive thing about UK? And no, “we” wouldn’t be embracing your scumbag embarrassment of a coach. Yes, his team is going better than ours, but he’s still scum and they are only doing better bc they aren’t in the SEC. Even the “weak” SEC teams that we got stomped by are better than most ACC teams.

Here’s what’s crazy: Mike Irwin is not unique. Equally ridiculous rants are all over Arkansas radio the last two days. It’s great to watch. This state is in absolute meltdown, and the misconceptions going out are breathtaking! People saying, “He’s gonna be a one-and-done anywhere, why wouldn’t he be loyal and stay home,” and “Going to Kentucky didn’t help Archie any; he would have been one-and-done and in the NBA just like he is if he had gone to Arkansas…” as though there’s no difference in the quality of the one-year college experience for elite players between Arkansas and Kentucky. People here have their heads in the sand. I would like to think Kentucky folks have a little more sense, and I think we do — the Damien Harris case is the perfect example.

Arkansas basketball is like Notre Dame football. They used to be really good, aren’t good anymore, but want to act like they’re still good.

    • RealCatsFan
      10:42 am November 19, 2015 Permalink

They had a couple of good seasons when they had lightning in a bottle with a couple of NBA caliber players. Kind of like what Donovan had at Florida for a couple of years.

    • VinDatuk
      10:47 am November 19, 2015 Permalink

You mean the same Notre Dame that played for a national championship a few years ago and is currently in line to make the CFB playoff? Not even close to the same thing. Maybe Penn State, Miami, or Va Tech would have been better comparisons. ND under Kelly has been pretty good.

    • J-Dub421
      10:49 am November 19, 2015 Permalink

Donovan won back to back titles, and then made several elite eights and a final four. Arkansas hasn’t been good since the Nolan Richardson days back in the early to mid nineties.

    • J-Dub421
      10:50 am November 19, 2015 Permalink

ND played a weak schedule then got stomped in the national title game by an SEC team.

    • RealCatsFan
      11:10 am November 19, 2015 Permalink

J-dub, true that UF had some continued success after the Noah&Co team. But they never really threatened for another NC, until maybe the 2013 team. Now that Donovan is gone, it will be interesting to see where their basketball program goes. I know very little about the coach they hired to succeed Donovan, and several UF fans I know are in the same camp. Seems like they may be swinging back to be an all-football school again, which is unfortunate, because it is a good thing to have stronger teams in the SEC.

Maybe Butler is a better comparison. πŸ™‚

    • RealCatsFan
      11:11 am November 19, 2015 Permalink

Also, maybe Nebraska would be a better football comparison to Arkansas basketball.

    • J-Dub421
      11:17 am November 19, 2015 Permalink

UF made three consecutive elite eights, then a final four. That’s a good four year run. Florida’s last coaching hire tells e that they are conceding basketball to us in the SEC. Fortunately several other teams just made some big coaching hires that should make them more competitive.

Matt: I have been watching the NFL since 1958 and I have now seen my first QB dancing after scoring a TD. Act like you have been there before and hand the ball to the official so they kick the extra point. Don’t do something that would cause a mean linebacker to try to end your career on the next series.
All the other top QB’s seem to be able to be able to resist the temptation to put on a planned hunching demonstration. If I were planning to run for congress, perhaps I would understand the dancing QB better.

Forget Mike Irwin. You should get Trey Schaap from 103.7 The Buzz in Little Rock. He’s the one who broke the story yesterday on Twitter and has all the “sources” saying Malik really wanted to go to Arkansas but his wanna-be-agent brother wouldn’t let him.

  31. Chickenhouse

Loved todays show… Regarding the interview with Radio host Nabors….Matt was WAY to easy on him. I listened to Nabors show. Nabors not only agreed with Mike Irwin, regarding his dislike of Calipari and Kentucky – but also agreed with Irwin’s bashing of Malik Monk for playing the system. Not once did Nabors try to voice common sense (as Matt Jones would have). You should have nailed him — you’re better than that Matt …

Secondly – I know that sour grapes happens, – but Mike Irwin almost seemed to encourage their fan base to lash out against Monk and his family. He even said that they would need to move from the city/state – which most persons would interpret as a threat. In light of this years events in the US – ESPN should not tolerate this type of rhetoric.

Finally – Irwin talked much about all that Arkansas and the fan base had invested in this kid. He talked about the favors that he (and possibly his family) had received.. I hope this gets the attention of the NCAA. What sort of favors? Who received them? We do not like to think this type of activity goes on in college sports – but it does (Exhibit A – University of Louisville’s staff sponsored “favors”).. I just hope that if UofA or its boosters are found to have provided favors to this kid or his family – that it does not come back to bite UK once Monk is playing for the Cats next year…(Could the NCAA declare him ineligible to play College basketball anywhere?)

Matt, Ryan, Curtis – I love your show – listen daily GO CATS.
