Former Open champion John Daly has withdrawn from The Open, only days after committing to play in The Open without his cart. Daly, who has approval from the PGA Tour to use a golf cart in PGA Tour events, was denied the use of his cart at Royal Portrush. Once he learned he would have to hoof it, Daly wrote about his disappointment in the decision, but said he would give it a shot anyway.

His plans have since changed, due to an unexpected turn of events. Daly suffered a spider bite while vacationing in England, and says he underwent surgery to remove a major infection in his abdominal area, and was treated for early sepsis. The bite came from a brown recluse, he said.
Now Daly has backed out of his commitment to The Open and our friends over at LEX18 are reporting he will play in the Barbasol Championship here in Kentucky instead. The Barbasol is considered an “alternate event,” played opposite of The Open.
