Jaylen Brown Is Heading to California

After months and months of silence on the Jaylen Brown front, 247’s number 3 player in the class of 2015 shocked the world tonight with a commitment to Cal. Only it wasn’t the Cal any of us wanted to see because instead of playing for Calipari he’ll be heading to California. Jaylen’s high school season ending banquet was tonight in Marietta, Georgia and it was after that shindig he announced his decision to become a Golden Bear. Evan Daniels broke the news after much back and forth on twitter:

“678 Winky Face” came through last night with a text to Matt saying Kentucky had the lead but the mystery man must have been a tad off base. Or those in his entourage that didn’t want him in Lexington were able to sway Brown today. Good luck to the kid as he journeys to the west.

I feel like I’ve fallen through some portal to an alternate reality. What is this kid thinking? Mind=blown

Either Winky or Scout misunderstood when they heard “Cal”

From Georgia, and goes out to Cal? Makes no sense at all. Sounds a little shady to me.

Did we ever hear anything about Murray visiting this weekend?

No, he’s not but he hasn’t ruled out UK yet. He might not even reclassify though so I wouldn’t count on him.

No, that was just Matt Jones hoping, and he was the only one even reporting that. As of now, there are no reports that Murray is reclassifying or is even considering us. Hopefully that can change, but i seriously doubt it.

i wonder if this recruiting season has anything to do with the fact (rumor) that everyone thought Cal would leave UK after he went 40-0…. so none of these kids were REALLY considering uk from the beginning…

Why wait until May to commit to California? Screw him! With Brown we could have been a final four contender, but now who knows… Probably not going to be a great year.

What the heck? Makes no sense at all. When is the last time you watched a Cal game on national TV? Weird. Good luck to him.

Thats ok, they not going to Duke, looserville or UNC, good luck to him.

If you want to make sure you avoid all potential press coverage of your college career, do one of these three things:

    1) Go to a non basketball tradition-rich school.
    2) Go to a school on the West Coast.
    3) Go to a school where nobody goes to the home games (Cal average attendance in 2014 – 7,700)

This dude has hit the proverbial bad-decision making trifecta!

Man, the recruiting world is upside down this year…I still can’t figure this one out. Either way, we’ll be fine…this is the year Willis grows up.

We just have to acknowledge that Kentucky is not for everyone. I can only say that the vast majority of the kids that have come to Kentucky have been great kids and the ones that have shunned us to go elsewhere haven’t always had the best college experience. We have a darn good group back and some strong freshman coming in. We’ll be fine…but I don’t understand some of the choices these kids made. Either they didn’t think they could handle the pressure at Kentucky or they were pressured by someone to go somewhere else. The only thing I would say to these kids is do what is best for you and not what is best for others.
    GO CATS !!

What I want to hear now is that Derek Willis is working his butt off this summer,
honing his jump shot to perfection, getting ultra-confident and ready to step up
and play the 3 this coming season. THIS is his CHANCE.

RandyB, I would say Derek needs to work on his defense a lot more than his jump shot. This news is simply bizarre. It’s not like we’re losing top recruits to Duke, Carolina, Sparty – it’s MSU, LSU and Cal. WTF?

I’m far from a “Chicken Little” or a conspiracy theorist, but all these misses do make me wonder if NBA opportunities could be brewing behind the scenes still this year for Cal.

Did Briscoe & Skal only sign financial aid papers? That could add to reasons to worry. I guess we just wait and see, and hope the worries don’t come to fruition.

Nice work by Cuonzo. Now let’s see if he’s able to do anything with the talent with Brown & Rabb.

Briscoe wasn’t going to sign, but he did sign a letter of intent. Cal would only go to Cavs or Bulls or some other contender with a player he wants to coach, and I don’t see an opening like that next year.

ukbradstith- Then you are not looking hard enough. There is a very good chance either the Cavs or the Bulls have an opening next year. I’m starting to think the back channel NBA stuff is more possible than others want to let on. Cal does not just miss every single recruit in the spring like this (even the 3 stars)
when he has playing time to offer. If Murray decides against UK then I think the NBA stuff is likely to happen

My thoughts exactly. Has Slice’s replacement been named or even speculated about outside of Barbee? Quiet on that front could be telling. Keep an eye on Kenny Payne putting his hat in the ring depending on if the coaching carousel continues after Florida fills its position.

My gut is this is simply the pendulum swinging in the other direction. This mega-class concept is still fairly new, and these top recruits no longer like the idea that their college decisions are foregone conclusions. They’re asserting that they’re going to forge their own path.

Or maybe, simply the competition has figured out a recruiting narrative that works against UK? How does a coach that couldn’t hack it at UT, get top recruits at a school that hasn’t made it past the sweet 16 since 1960? Sometimes I wonder if the kids don’t care about the NCAA tournament OR think their star power is enough to alter 55 years of history (Jason Kidd’s sure wasn’t). The timing is tough as we’re losing a record amount of talent and have a so-so (for us) class coming in. Perhaps Skal will be as transformative as Davis was.

In the end, choosing California is like choosing to play in Europe. We’ll never see or hear of this guy again. He’s disappearing. He was never born.

Maybe, when the MSUs, Cals, UNLVs go on to lose in the round of 32, when they play in front of crowds at 60% capacity, the next group of elite recruits reconsider the rebellion and the pendulum will swing back. Maybe the year after.

      12:27 am May 2, 2015 Permalink

Even if they lose in round of 32 and all the other things you say, they will still be top draft picks and get paid big time money……even playing at Cal, LSU, MSU Kansas etc. Barring injury Brown, Newman, Diallo and Simmons will all be top 10 picks next year in the draft.

I always had the feeling that Brown wanted to play where the emphasis was BROWN. Not Brown as part of a team. Very strange … but UK isn’t for everyone. I never had a good feeling about Brown coming here. See ya.
