James Wiseman picks Memphis

To no one’s surprise, James Wiseman has committed to Memphis.

The top big man in the 2019 class picked the Tigers over Kentucky, Kansas, Vanderbilt, and Florida State. Kentucky and John Calipari were once longtime favorites in the recruitment, but when Penny Hardaway took the job at Memphis, the pull to play for his former high school and EYBL coach was too much for Wiseman to resist.

With Wiseman out of the picture, Kentucky will focus on other options like Vernon Carey, Isaiah Stewart, Matthew Hurt, Jaden McDaniels, and Keion Brooks. Carey is set to narrow his list this week; it would be really, really great if the Cats made the cut.

TJ Walker will have more on the repercussions of Wiseman’s decision in a few.

Hey, at least it isn’t Duke.

True. And after his high school coach became the local college coach and a few of his teammates committed… It was over. Not to mention local rappers stopping by your house to praise you.

Hope it works for him… but I don’t think it’s a smart move.

We need coach O back. Couple of our assistants aren’t getting it done.

Let’s not dwell on this….. handwriting has been on the wall for months. Wiseman is dead to me.

I’m not at all comfortable about any of the others and with Whitney deciding not to sign early there may be more to that.

      Herro
      Hagans
      Baker
      Maxey
      Allen

Those are probably the only locks in next years roster. So IMHO tons of PT available for a big if they want it.

Man, we get a lot of great recruits, but we miss on a lot of big name guys too

First of all once Coach K dies or retires whichever happens first Duke will be done. Secondly it’s not the end if the world its one dude. Third the one and done us ruining college basketball. Would it matter to you if you where 17 or 18 if you won a title or not when next year your going to make multi millions. Think about being a teenager and not coming from a wealthy family. I’ve said it for along time the almighty dollar rules the world and it isn’t changing.

Idk if Cal will ever get another difference making one-and-done player again. It’s ok to use the OAD system if you can get elite guys that can play day one. But he hasn’t gotten those players in 3 years now (and I’m being generous including Fox, Monk and Bam). It is time to change back to a traditional recruiting style. CATS

I think this is a bit of an over reaction… I mean I won’t lie seems we have taken some hits here of late… But we will bounce back and Cal will come through again… Eventually Cal will start getting the top recruits again… Recruiting is a bunch of highs and lows and it comes in waves… The sun will shine again on Kentucky

I guess when you’re headed to the nba after one year it doesn’t matter if you win in college or not. I mean, he’s home, and also has his former coach as his new coach so…

If the kid wants to be a 2 or 3 year college player or get picked after the lottery I’m happy for him. He made the right choice.

Landing Wiseman seemed like a longshot when Memphis hired his AAU coach. Looks kind of like when Fultz played at Washington, puts up some numbers but the team didn’t do anything. It may be easier just because he’ll be playing lesser talent, but he doesn’t have any excuses if he’s not averaging a double-double.

JUST FACE IT, CAL HAS LOST IT SPENT 2 YEARS RECRUITING THE KID AND IT ONLY TAKES LESS THAN A YEAR FOR ANOTHER COACH TO COME IN AND STEAL HIM

Carey, Stewart, and Anthony to duke.. Hurt to Kansas. Write it down. We’ll get Brooks, but we already have Whitney (maybe) and Allen at same spot.

Being humiliated by Duke hurts recruiting more than anyone has acknowledged. There is much more to it, of course, but being embarrassed in front of a national audience is damaging. It suggests that Kentucky is in decline as an elite program and that Cal has lost his luster. Go ahead and quote Cal’s past successes as much as you want, but big time basketball is a “what have you done for me lately” proposition. Cal hasn’t done much lately. Now that we have lost yet another top recruit, it is not likely that we will land a top five recruit for next year. Cal has had a great run at Kentucky, but there is ample reason to believe that his best days are in the past.

Agreed and when you see guys like Skal and Hami who were top guys to late first round to second picks, it doesn’t do him any favors. Not winning 2 or 3 more titles with all that talent has killed us. It’s time to get some new assistants.

Lol what a bunch is sad sack comments. Woe is me, my life is so wrapped up in the choice of an 18 year old kid that I just can’t wait to post on KSR how miserable my life is when he makes the choice we all knew he was making. And it was NOT an illogical choice. Boo frickin’ hoo. You think Villanova cried the last few years when they missed out on top recruits? No, they just went and won it all. Twice.
