James Blackmon Jr. talks about his unofficial visit to Lexington

Yesterday, four-star shooting guard James Blackmon Jr. took an unofficial visit to UK, and according to his interview with the Courier-Journal’s Steve Jones, had a great time. Blackmon and his father were on campus for about five hours, and toured the campus, Wildcat Coal Lodge, and practice facility with John Calipari, even getting in some shots with the Harrison Twins, Marcus Lee and Julius Randle.

Blackmon’s father played for UK in the 80’s, and his son says his dad was pretty shocked by how much his old stomping ground had changed:

“My dad was real surprised at how things have changed, and he was kind of mad how the locker room looks so much better. …They had his pictures on his wall, and he showed me where he used to be when we were around the campus, and he said he had a lot of memories.”

The younger Blackmon says he was impressed by UK’s facilities and said Calipari told him if he came to Kentucky, he’d use him at shooting guard and at point guard. Cal also gave him the standard “Kentucky isn’t for everyone” speech, but Blackmon isn’t scared:

“I’m really the type of player that likes challenges,” he said. “I’m not really scared to play with good players around me and four other guys like me around me. But I haven’t really made any decisions.”

Blackmon enjoyed his visit so much he finalized his plans to take an official for Big Blue Madness in October. Today, he’s taking an unofficial visit to Louisville. Don’t go to the dark side, James.

TRUE combo guards are quite rare. Most guys coming out of high school have a scorer’s mentality regardless, but not all of them can both play the 1 and the 2 at a high level.

Great to see that Blackmon Sr. has been with Jr. and doesn’t resent UK. I wasn’t sure if that was the case or not, since his career at UK did not go as well as was expected and we really haven’t heard much from him in two decades. If I remember correctly, he was a top 5 recruit.

you guys asking about the white streak, i think it’s called piebald … rasheed wallace had a spot very similar … it’s just a spot where there is no pigment … unless he actually puts that there

stoops said they decided on a qb, but they are not going to officially announce it and let wku know ahead of time … most are assuming whitlow will be the guy, though … people have said his accuracy has really improved and he’s obviously more mobile

I’m sorry Blackmon jr. that you have to go from the glorious meca of college basketball to the state dump. Could just skip the visit to “da ville” we all know how this story ends.

I was freshman same year as JB Sr. I remember he & Kenny Walker having an impromptu dunk contest at outdoor courts near Holmes Hall. Both in jeans & topsiders. JB Sr. won it IMO. Funny, I visited my son this weekend & recognized those courts are gone. Remember James & Winston B rocked the Geri-Curls.

Get this guy in BLUE, we are going to need guards for 2014! It scares me that Cal is telling the kid he wants to use him at the point. though…. starting to think we are not going to have an elite PG next season, which didn’t end well the last time that happened *cough* Ryan Harrow *cough*

Well now, “Bum deal” – you must truly be a moron. And speaking of college mecca (not meca – go back to school and learn how to spell) UK IS the mecca of college basketball. And I shall not even mention that stupid nickname for that little school in the glorious State of KENTUCKY. I guess that 10-letter word is too much for you. Maybe they can get there in another 27 years. LOL! And, Bum (what an appropriate name) you did give me a good knee-slappin’ laugh with your idiocy. As a matter of fact, I’m still laughing. Have a happy BIG BLUE day!
