Ja Morant named Rookie of the Year

Former Murray State star Ja Morant is now the NBA’s 2019-20 Rookie of the Year. Life comes at you fast.

Morant had a stellar year with the Grizzlies leading to his Rookie of the Year status, averaging 17.8 points per game and leading all current NBA rookies in scoring and assists. The Grizzlies, however, barely missed this season’s Bubble playoffs, knocked out by Carmelo Anthony, Damian Lillard and the Portland Trail Blazers for the last undecided spot in the playoffs.

Morant joins Karl Anthony-Towns as only the second player who played college in the state of Kentucky to be named Rookie of the Year. KAT claimed the honor in 2016.

Morant won in a landslide against former Duke small forward Zion Williamson, with Morant receiving 99 out of the 100 votes. The lone dissenter voted for Zion.

Morant had a special message for the singular voter who did not vote for him this year.

I don’t know that this guy needs any more motivation, but kudos to the one person who didn’t vote for him. Morant is looking to tear it up in the new season, and in the process will be entertaining for all of us. So thanks, one guy who voted for Zion!

Earlier this summer, Morant made headlines in Kentucky for writing a letter in support of removing a Confederate statue in downtown Murray, a place he called his “second home.”
