Introducing Billy Gillispie (If We Knew What We Know Now)

In honor of tonight’s game against Texas A&M, the generous university that gave us Billy Gillispie, I remixed the original newscast from the day Gillispie was introduced at UK. Imagine the coverage that day if we knew what we know now.

Enjoy.

If we knew now what we know about Cal when we had the chance to bring him in the first time……..a lot of things would have been very different.

It works both ways…..consider it a blessing that we had to deal with BillyG to get the administration to go get Cal after the disaster.

A great point! I wanted Calipari the first time, if we didn’t get Donovan. In hindsight, Cal should have been my first choice lol.

I can’t wait to see the one just like this with Stoops name on it, in a couple years.

Stoops is competing with the best programs in the country for recruits now, and winning fairly often. A Gillispie recruit, who he offered a scholarship here at UK, recently had a game where he scored 0 points for Asbury. Get back beneath your bridge, troll.

How is he doing in the coaching category against the best or even mediocre programs in the country?

Sarcasm- Most of UK’s players last year were more suited to the MAC than the SEC, and you expected Stoops to do really well right out of the gate? It takes some time in football to turn things around. The guy is a football coach, not a wizard. Now run along, your mom told me to let you know your Hot Pockets are ready and it’s time to get off the computer.

So you are saying he can recruit better than Joker, but can’t coach better? I rest my case.

What he’s saying is you can’t polish a turd. It’s really hard to judge true coaching ability when you’ve got MAC caliber against SEC caliber, because there’s just not enough to do anything with. If he’s not bowl eligible with mostly his team, then we will talk. Part of coaching is recruiting, and if you don’t have pieces that work your finished product is going to be crap regardless of how you spin it.

You have to make a case before you can rest it.

I will say one positive thing about Gillispie. He must give a hell of an interview to have covered up what an incompetent, raging jackass and alcoholic he is in reality. But those days are long, long gone. Now we have fans that complain about having too many talented guys, a problem I definitely didn’t see coming in the dark days of Billy G. I will forever hold a grudge against him for ruining my first year of UK bball as a student here. Go to hell, Gillispie.

  15. DTuck

You are getting your girlfriends mixed up. It was Alex Legioin’s girlfriend. Jasper transferred because Gillispie kept trying to get him to wreck his knee by playing. Jasper actually was going to take a grad assistant job with Gillispie at Texas Tech before he screwed that job up too.

My uncle knew someone who worked in the athletic department down at A&M. He said when Gillispie was hired, the only fans cheering harder than UK’s were A&M’s. They couldn’t wait to get rid of him. I think if Barnhart had done his homework on Gillispie, he would have seen the same stuff that ultimately got Gillispie fired. I think UK wasted so much time trying to lure Donovan that they didn’t have a lot of time for an adequate plan B. Good riddance though!

What’s with the reporter at the start saying he’s the 6th coach in Kentucky basketball’s 76 year history? The program was around a lot longer than 76 years, and has had a lot more than 6 coaches.

The only thing that would make this better is if you’d added Jim Mora’s famous rant “Playoffs?! Don’t talk about playoffs! Are you kidding me? Playoffs?! I’m just hoping we can win a game, another game!”
