Rhyne Howard is this week’s SEC Player of the Week in the sport of women’s basketball and the news comes as no surprise after Howard dropped 29 and then 30 points in UK’s last two games. By my math, that is 29.5 points per game for the week while shooting almost 60 percent from the field and almost 50 percent from outside in victories over Charlotte and Samford. She also averaged 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals per game during that span.
This week’s honor is the first ever SEC Player of the Week award for Howard, surprisingly; although, she did take home a league-record eight SEC Freshman of the Week awards last season as a true freshman.
It just so happens we had her head coach, Matthew Mitchell, on Kentucky Sports Radio the morning before the league office handed out its awards for the week earlier today. The “Old Town Road” performer said of his star player, “She is a real, real difference maker; not only with her scoring, but she makes everybody around her better. A great passer, a tough defender, great rebounder. I tell people she can really score the basketball; such a great three-point shooter, it’s amazing.”
You can hear KSR’s entire interview with Coach Mitchell, which includes a lot more about Howard and your 2019-20 Kentucky Wildcats women’s basketball team, by clicking play right here:
You should also consider helping Mitchell and his team pack the house this coming Sunday in their annual “Pack The House” game at Rupp Arena. Tickets are very cheap and easily accessible, and the opponent is Louisville. You can also catch the Cats in Rupp Arena tomorrow night against Winthrop in what will hopefully be a breeze of a game before Sunday’s action gets really real.
Next two games at Rupp.
