Hot Take: Duke canceled last year’s trip for Bagley and should be penalized

Photo: John David Mercer | USA TODAY Sports

Duke will play three games in Canada as its preseason exhibition tour this August, which the NCAA allows every four years. Kentucky is also taking its tour this summer, to the Bahamas, before the two teams collide in the Champions Classic to officially kick off the season.

The preseason exhibition games will provide much-needed experience for two of the youngest teams in college basketball; as will the accompanying 10 practices that are permitted in the weeks leading up to the international competition.

But I’m here to call Duke out and demand the NCAA strip Duke of three of its 10 additional summer practices.

You see, Duke was all set to take its exhibition tour last summer until the trip was spontaneously canceled only days before the team and its fans were to depart for the Dominican Republic. Coach K said the reason behind the cancelation was for an unexpected knee surgery, but it was quite a coincidence the team stayed home from the DR as the No. 1 player in America, Marvin Bagley, was scrambling to reclassify and commit to a program.

Duke was scheduled to leave the States as Bagley decided he was ready to make his decision. If you want to believe the Duke staff stayed home for Coach K’s impromptu surgery, you’re more than welcome to believe that or whatever else you’d like. I choose to believe Duke didn’t want to be on an island in the Caribbean as Bagley worked to get cleared for college basketball at the very last minute; while UCLA, USC, Arizona, Kansas and Kentucky were in hot pursuit of Bagley’s commitment.

Whether that is true or not, we’ll probably never know. But we do know Duke got in three of the additional preseason summer practices (allowed only every four years) before canceling the trip. Obviously the NCAA couldn’t make Duke “un-practice” after it decided not to go to the Dominican, but it can take those three practices away from Duke this summer. And it should. If not, teams should schedule a trip every fall, practice 10 times, then cancel before leaving so it never counts against the four-year rule.

And Coach K absolutely called off that trip for Bagley. Change my mind.

Never happen because its Puke! Just the same as nothing would happen if it was NC. Now let UK do something like that and they’d wear us out.

So….you expect the NCAA to be fair and just? Did you recently return from a 5 year stint on a deserted island with a new friend named Wilson?

I dislike duke so much i believe they should be penalized for existing. screw them does anyone remember a few years ago when their fans started chanting stuff about a maryland players recently deceased grandmother. they are literally the worst kind of people. they deserve any and every kind of punishment for anything anyone can think of true or false.

Corey Maggette or Lance Thomas ring a bell?

Meh, of all the things the NCAA should be worried about this is way down there

Oh, cry me a river. You’re worried about 3 practices from last year because we open with Duke this year. Are we not the gold standard of college basketball? Man, you’re whiney.

You’re wrong Drew. Flat out wrong. And even if you’re right … you’re wrong. Whatever lies Coach K tells everyone else is wrong. Chisel it in stone. When Coach K is wrong he’s right and everyone else is wrong.

This isn’t a hot take. It isn’t even lukewarm. But it is crippled in that it’s firmly supported by logic and reason, two concepts which are utterly foreign to the NCAA.

Hot take- I dont want Vandetbilt back at all. Too many unknowns with him and ifvUK fans didn’t forcebthe issue he probably would’ve never played. He has had all this time and he waits until the last second to announce? Nah were good, go wherever you like. And I love his game and if healthy he would definitely be a big contributor but something about him is just not right. Remember we also went .500 when he returned this year.

This isn’t a hot take at all, it’s 100% on point! Every team should take a foreign trip, wait 4 years, then just plan on practicing every summer and canceling whatever trip they had “scheduled” so as to keep the ball rolling for next year, and every year after that. This might actually be the first time in decades that K has had a good idea all on his own.

Dont forget… your head coach has to undergo total knee replacement surgery every year along with physical rehabilitation and miss about a month.

Sure. Because history says PRE-SEASON games have been cancelled because the head coach was unable to travel. PLEASE. No games-pre, Post, or regular have EVER been cancelled for such. Admit it was a sham for Bagley or you’re simply not credible. It is what it is, why pretend?

Drew stop being so butthurt over lost by a recruit. UK has a much worse history, than anything Maggette or Thomas did, of wrongdoings by past players, but you won’t mention that.

Sure it does, Drew is butthurt! Stop being so arrogant and worried about 3 practices cause you’re scared of that first game, dickhead.

Sounds like you’re more butthurt because Drew expressed an opinion on a website you visited that, ya know, was kinda built on his opinions.

    • Scared of the first game? Give me a break. He apparently hit a sore spot with someone.

Hello, fellow dUKe apologist. You’re probably not an alum like myself (ahem), but it’s always nice to see some Duke #truth being dispensed to UK fans.

My question is, why are Duke fans reading or caring about what’s being posted on KSR? Do UK fans do that to you guys? Am I missing something besides the fact that there aren’t any Duke sites that are near as relevant?

This would be a national headline if Cal did the same thing this year. Heck, he’d probably be suspended for the Duke game. Oh well, I’m not worried about it. I see Duke getting destroyed by us in November and failing miserably this year.

I’m so tired of hearing “If it was Cal”.

    • TonyMontana I try to remind myself that literally every fan base thinks it’s unfairly treated by the NCAA but it is still annoying.

Whatever. Point is Coach K doesn’t get held accountable for anything that any other coach would, not just Cal.

I wonder if three practices is the max you can have when you cancel the trip? More than three and the trip counts even if you didn’t go? That would be interesting to find out.

This is a pretty silly conspiracy theory. Coach K didn’t want to be on an island because he needed to be in close contact with Bagley, but was OK with undergoing surgery… meaning he was no more available than he would have been in the Bahamas.

I dislike K, but seeing animus in this takes some pretty hard squinting.
