Great news! Vanderbilt to keep Derek Mason

The brass over at Vanderbilt must’ve seen something they liked in the Commodores’ 24-point loss to your University of Kentucky Wildcats down in Nashville last weekend. Whatever it was, it was enough for Mason to keep his job despite a 2-8 record, including a home loss to UNLV, this season.

Vandy AD Malcolm Turner took up for his head football coach on Tuesday, tweeting to his followers, “I want to make it very clear that Derek Mason will be our head football coach moving forward. Coach Mason has my full support and I am committed to working with him to ensure our football program has the necessary resources and support to succeed.”

“We are in the midst of developing a new and robust athletic strategic plan with the vision to put the football program and all of our varsity sports in a position to win on and off the field of play,” Turner added. “Coach Mason is committed to leading Vanderbilt’s football program the right way and we will move forward in that spirit together.”

This is good news for Kentucky fans. More Derek Mason? Um, yes please. The Cats have won five of six games against Derek Mason (he stole one at home in his second year). The score over that six-year span of Stoops v. Mason is Kentucky 150, Vanderbilt 83.

Wonderful news out of Nashville this afternoon!
