Governor Beshear and Mayor Gray are in studio to talk about the Rupp Project (Friday Show Thread)

gray-beshear

Good morning, friends. There are shows, and then there are shows. Today is definitely the latter. ON the heels of UK President Eli Capilouto’s scathing letter to LCC Chairman Brent Rice, Governor Steve Beshear and Lexington Mayor Jim Gray are in studio with Matt to talk about the status of the Rupp Arena project, starting at 10:30 a.m.

With the financial plan in shreds, state funding denied, and the University backing away, the project is at a low point. Tune in to hear the mayor and the governor, two of the project’s biggest supports, discuss whether or not a renovated Rupp can still be a reality, and if so, what must happen.

Join in on the fun by calling (502) 571-1080.

I’m happy to see Kentucky get a huge baseball win last night, but I hate the format. UK will play Florida or Mississippi State on Saturday, both teams we’ve beaten in this tournament. If UK loses, we our out despite it being our first lost, to a team we’ve already beat. Matt tell thanks for making the Jeopardy! Battle of the Decades tournament better by having his commercial every night during it.

Let this die!! Most kentuckians really do not see a need to waste 100’s of millions of dollars on a stupid basketball arena. Don’t get me wrong, I love my cats.. But that’s exactly why I think this is a terrible idea. Rupp is perfectly fine the way it is and always has been. If this project goes any further it will probably end badly for UK, Lexington, and Kentucky in general. Is our best argument seriously: “well they got a new one down the road”.. Grow up guys.. Rupp is more than okay the way it is now and we can’t afford to waste the money in this economy. This is an example of an idea that gets out of control. NOT everyone wants this..

    1. Jim Hosts role in this debacle has been under reported… the “Turble” lease he negotiated with UofL at Yum Center has had a tremendous impact in Frankfort.

The idea put forth that renovating Rupp is good for the state of Kentucky, is TOTAL BULLSHIT!

Those of us in the step-child region, i.e. Western Kentucky will not/would not benefit one iota from such an expenditure Lexington and the metro would.

The jealousy of the YUM center is a total façade.

Sucks for u!!! Hey look me wanting a new arena is not because i think it will help every single person in the state!! Thats an idiotic notion to think any arena would!!! For a top basketball program our facilities are not top 30 anymore !!! We need a new arena we waiste so much tax money every single year on dead projects and projects that dont get finished!! We need an arena and i will consider any amount of money well spent compared to throwing it away the way politicians always do!!

It’s clear that the Rupp Renovation is no longer about Ky Basektball, with the University saying that it can’t stand behind the current project. It seems obvious that the Rupp Renovation is about the Mayor building his legacy. Brent Rice continues to try to Bully his way into his and the Mayors agenda. Finally someone, Dr. Capilouto has called them out on it.

      10:50 am May 23, 2014 Permalink

Is a significant hill to climb. The 3rd candidate got 5%. I don’t see Beatty getting all that 5% or the other 14%. The city is doing pretty well overall under Gray and personally it is only the extreme right wingers I’ve met that hate him. They tend to hate gays and aren’t fond of African Americans so what choice will they have? Mickey Mouse?

    • KentuckyHouse
      11:29 am May 23, 2014 Permalink

While I’m sure Anthony Beatty is a fine human being and seemed to be a good Chief of Police, the last thing Lexington needs is a recent chief of police as mayor. As if Police and Fire don’t already get everything they want (and the rest of the city employees scrounge for the scraps), just imagine if someone they know that’s “one of them” is mayor? Heck, just look at his campaign ads…in nearly every one, the very first thing he mentions is how Lexington should have “world class public safety”. Translation: I’m gonna give Police and Fire everything they want.

No thanks. Jim Gray has done an admirable job, especially with the mess Newberry left him. Newberry…talk about a worthless mayor. Ugh.

If u just take size of crowd out of mix Rupp isnt even in the top 25 college arenas!!! Seems odd a UK fan would want to keep it that way cause he doesnt think money from Rupp will get to every area of the whole state of Kentucky?? Sports is an escape. KSR is an escape. I’m not slamming him for doing it, but at the same time, I am saying it takes away from the enjoyment of the show and, in the end, a radio show exists to entertain and inform about its subject matter.

So, not much insight. No news. Just dodging the issue of “the letter” (and who expected anything else?) and blaming the entity not in the room, the university. I don’t blame the mayor for not talking about the letter. What benefit would there be for him to admit it was stupid? It would simply weaken his team if he threw them under the bus. That would be dumb on his part. By not defending it, he acknowledged that it was a mistake. No need for a pound of flesh.

The politicians were right in saying, “Let’s keep looking for a solution.”

Ultimately, this did not move the conversation forward. It didn’t get the mea culpa Matt wanted. And it basically wasted the governor’s time.

Matt’s decision to go with the question of the gay marriage appeal to the Governor served 2 purposes:

    1) Get at least some newsworthy quotes out of an otherwise useless interview on the part of the Mayor and Governor.

    and

    2) Try to see what kind of response the Governor would give about trying to ban gay marriage while Mayor Jim Gray (who is gay, himself) was sitting right next to him.

“75 percent of Kentucky voters support banning gay marriage!”

Of the 2,700,000 voters that were registered in 2004, 50.3% turned out to vote. So just over a million supported banning gay marriage, less than half of registered Kentucky voters, and only around a quarter of Kentuckians.

I agree with what u said Chad but i do think Rupp sucks now !!! There are too many college basketball venues that are way better!!! I think Uk not having a top 25 facility makes no sense to me either!! Plus i believe that large percentages of tax money is waisted!! So even though i get it sounds less then brilliant but i think the arena needs to get done !!
