What a game yesterday. I can’t complain because we were an underdog with a chance to win at the end. Congrats to our guys, good luck to the 3 seniors, & the rest of the guys moving on to the next level! Go Cats!

I bet there are some happy trolls out there this morning. What a shame to be one missed open three, a couple rebounds, free throws, or getting back on defense on a runout away from putting the last villain out of the tourney and advancing to the FF. Barf.

Is there any way for Cal to protest that John Higgins never ref a UK game again? I mean there’s too much evidence, from previous games, that he hates UK!

    • A couple folks mentioned the Michigan State tourney game in 2005 he refed (reffed?) as well as UCONN in 2011. Forgive my memory, but what happened in those? I know MSU was double OT but I don’t remember controversial calls from that one or UCONN 2011.

      I guess I’m getting old.

Here’s the thing, CGINWTTD. No one actually has any way of demonstrating that John Higgins “screwed” the Cayts.

They just see that he happened to ref three NCAA tourney games and that UK lost those games – so of course it must have been his fault!

For a program with 8 national titles (although only 4 in the last 39 years), there are certainly a lot of fans that seem to have an inferiority complex.

I am curious as to how many close games UK has lost due to poor free throw shooting. In yesterday’s game, they lost the battle of the boards and had poor FT shooting most of the game, especially the first half. If they had hit their FTs at a nominal rate, don’t think the game would have been close. I believe we have had many close games due to missing 1 plus 1 etc.

As stated this lose is easier to swallow because our guys fought very hard to the very end. I believe the striped shirts didn’t help but just a step closer there, foul call here and there, the outcome may have been entirely different..

Coaches should be able to veto a coach who obviously has it out for a team.

Also – I am in agreement that they should go to six fouls for the players, and each team should have one challenge per half so that a bad, game affecting call can be overturned. We have the technology to correct these errors now – why not use it? They do it in football.

We also need officials who can physically keep up with the pace of the modern game, and some sort of public accountability (I think an official’s post game question session) for the refs.

The reason yesterday hurt so much was the stakes. Looking at the rest of the bracket, everyone knew that the winner, whoever it was, would be an odds-on favorite for win the championship. So that made it a de facto national title game, baring a shocker in Phoenix. Major lost opportunity.

You mentioned teams, not coaches. Martin has made a couple of deep runs with SEPARATE teams.

I would be interested in Few, but I honestly don’t think he will come to UK. He doesn’t seem like the typical mid-major coach looking for a blue-blood job. As proven this year, he can compete nationally where he’s at. He’s been at Gonzaga for 28 years. Assistant from 1989-1999, head coach from 1999-now. He’s not going anywhere.

    • RealCatsFan

LongRoad, I think Few is starting to get up there in years, and I doubt you could ever get him to leave the west coast. It would be like trying to pry Izzo away from Michigan State of Donovan from Florida.

RG – Good point. This is Gonzaga & Coach Few’s 1st ever Final Four appearance. This is also South Carolina & Coach Martin’s 1st ever Final Four. Took Few 18 years at Gonzaga to get his first one. Took Martin 5 years at South Carolina to get his first.

    • Bama has never made the Final 4. I think they made the Elite 8 once. Back in the 80’s they had a REALLY good team that I thought would go deep (Mike Gottfried, Jim Farmer, Derrick McKey…I’m not sure if Robert Horry was there yet), but they ran into Ricky P’s hot Providence team and got bounced in the Sweet 16.

    • LongRoad2017

Good points. But a team just doesn’t make it far without a good coach, PERIOD. Let Martin do more before we start playing Monday Morning AD. Besides, Cal isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Martin could go to the NIT next year and everyone will forget what is going on now. Did anyone want Nolan Richardson here?

    • Laker Cat 18
      11:09 am March 27, 2017 Permalink

LR – I define good coaches by their ability to succeed at more than one place. Cal falls under that category. I don’t classify success at other programs as national championships. Martin has succeeded at his fair share of schools with an Elite 8 and now a Final Four. A couple of years ago, I was looking at Shaka Smart from VCU. I wouldn’t put him up there right now because he has shown nothing at Texas. No one is playing AD, just looking ahead. It is my opinion that Cal won’t coach until he can’t coach anymore. He will retire early because he has other things he would like to accomplish in life. Politics would be my first guess, with another attempt at the NBA being a second. With that said, I would be curious to know your main targets for life after Cal in a few years.

    • LongRoad2017
      11:20 am March 27, 2017 Permalink

I honestly haven’t thought too hard about it….I guess I’d like to think Cal will be here until he hangs another banner. Now that I’m on the spot, it is hard to think of a coach out there who could handle the job at UK. Maybe Martin would be a good fit in that regard. I can’t see Bill Self leaving Kansas; Izzo is too old; Brad Stephens might not be available, and he’s out of the recruiting loop these days.Bruce Pearl has peaked. Billy D is probably staying put in the NBA for awhile. I just don’t know…

    • Laker Cat 18
      11:31 am March 27, 2017 Permalink

I wouldn’t disagree with anything you said. I think all of those names are off the table. I’ve never been a Self fan. I think many coaches could roll into KU and do an equivalent job there. The only exception would be if the NBA guys (Donovan or Stevens) get ran out, but I don’t see that happening based on timing and money. The 3 current college coaches that I may take a chance on would be Martin, Bob Huggins (hopefully he’s healthy enough), and Chris Mack (Xavier). Possibly Cronin at Cincinnati.

White at Florida did a great job this year! I think he needs a couple more years to prove himself consistently, but the future is bright. Watch out for him to Ole Miss when they finally decide that Andy Kennedy has outworn his welcome there. It will be soon. Maybe Martin, Mack, Huggins, Cronin, Marshall in that order? I may still have Sean Miller at Arizona on that list as well even though he is still yet to prove himself there. You recruit better at UK than Arizona.

The arrogance of people who brag about being wealthy and think they are better than others because of it makes me want to wish some kind of exotic disease involving genitals rotting off to descend upon them, and lead them to a slow, painful, embarrassing death.

Agreed. Maybe Clay Travis can take some of his money and buy some intelligence and class.

    • I think Travis was trying to be cute by using a line from the new “Justice League” trailer. In it the Flash asks Bruce Wayne what his super powers are and he says “I’m rich”. Travis is still a jerk, but I think that’s where he got the idea.

Beginning of the season, I thought Bam was strong. After the season, I’m not so certain. Mentally, he’s not up to his potential. At times he looked like he could rip the rim off the backboard, other times he looked soft.

Bam did as much as he could do whenever possible. It is hard to get a freshman to take the beating he has, every game. Our weakest spots were post and the 4. Not a lot of inside dominance came against experienced older bigger and stronger players. Give Bam another year with weights and nutrition, the dude will be a freaking all american superstar in beast mode every night.
I really thank him for coming to UK, heck of a fine individual, and a great player, no doubt. His upside still is untapped.

I am like Chester – found myself waking up at 3:30 AM thinking about the game. Woke up hoping it was a bad dream, but the news on the radio popped that bubble.

Speaking of bad dreams, found out Friday that a girl I was friends with back in college passed away last week from cancer. Left behind a husband and two kids, and a class of students who loved her. Puts a painful loss like this in perspective.

    3. West Virginia Elite Eight ’10
    4. Connecticut FF ’11
    5. North Carolina Elite Eight ’17

I am proud of our team, as I am every year. I think it was there for us and we fell short. Blame it on whatever you want, officiating, free throw shooting, whatever. I hate it that it ended in the manner it did, but we were there and it was ours for the taking. 2 timeouts left, a forty minute battle, tired players. Call one and set up a defense. get some rest, make sure the kids, especially the freshmen, know exactly what to do. Why save the timeouts? I promise I am not criticizing. Too easy, on a game that ripped the heart out of everyone. I know I am not an expert on college basketball. It is easy to second guess after it is over.
I feel awful for the boys. I feel bad for all of them; coaches, trainers, equipment managers, all of them.
    Go Cats. Bless the BBN.
Onward to a Blue World Order.

They are both equally hateable in my book. Both are notorious cheaters who are protected by the NCAA as the golden children. I think Williams is the slightly more likable coach between the two of them.

As awful as this may seem, and it is awful, I never hated Laetner. nor do I hate the guy that got the shot last night. I am not fond of Pitino for not guarding the inbounds pass, and I am not fond of Pelphry standing there and doing nothing while a college player does a turnaround jumpshot inside the key, what they work on every day. Likewise, not mad at North Carolina for taking what we gave them. we could have called a timeout, had two left, set up the D, give our players a chance to rest and get calmed down. That was not the reason we lost, there are others. It was a close game. I hated how it ended. This is the anger that follows sorrow after a loss, I suppose.
Bless the Cats, and thank you for a wonderful season. I hate that it ended in this manner. I hate the hurt they all must be feeling.
But for me, my hate will be held not for those who won, but for the hurt it caused to lose.
I still hate Louisville though, should that matter to anyone.

I don’t hate the UNC players, BK. I actually find Meeks kind of likable – he is actually pretty funny in a Charles Barkley kind of way. Maye seems like a good kid too. I just hate the institution that is UNC Basketball, and the way it seems to have protected status by the NCAA and the media. Same with Duke. (Although Duke does seem adept at attracting douchebag players like Allen and Laettner).

I agree with that caller. That question isn’t necessary right after the loss. It’s not even a time that you can get a reliable answer. They don’t know what they’re really gonna do in that moment they’re in pain from the season ending minutes before.
