Friday’s Top 10: USA-Germany; Cats begin play in Vegas

Today’s Fans of the Day were traveling around the St. Anthony’s sand dunes out in Idaho when they ran into a Tennessee Vols fan wearing his worst orange. It made for a pretty cool photo, so let’s use it to kick off our Friday.

Let’s go.

1. Team USA in the quarterfinals against Germany.

John Calipari and the boys will be back in action today in the quarterfinals of the 2017 FIBA World Cup. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. and it can be streamed live on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN App.

The Americans won their first four games by an average of 45.5 points a game, while putting up 108 points a game.

Germany enters the quarterfinals contest with a 3-1 record.

2. The Las Vegas Summer League kicks off today.

The Vegas league, the big one, begins today and will feature several of your favorite former Kentucky Wildcats. Today’s action looks like this:

6:00 pm | NBATV | New Orleans Pelicans (James Young) vs. Toronto Raptors (Mychal Mulder)
8:00 pm | NBATV | Brookyln Nets (Archie Goodwin) vs. Atlanta Hawks
8:30 pm | ESPN | Los Angeles Clippers (Kyle Wiltjer) vs. Los Angeles Lakers
10:30 pm | ESPN2 | Phoenix Suns (Tyler Ulis) vs. Sacramento Kings (De’Aaron Fox, Skal Labissiere, Dominique Hawkins)

Of course we’ll have all of the highlights and statistics here on Kentucky-Sports-Radio-dot-com.

3. The Orlando and Utah summer leagues are over.

Derek Willis is back in Lexington, but Bam Adebayo and Dakari Johnson flew from Orlando to Las Vegas for another run with the respective teams. Alex Poythress, Aaron Harrison and Isaiah Briscoe left Salt Lake City for Sin City with the Sixers. They’ll get the Warriors summer league team late Saturday night.

4. Briscoe played well last night.

After being a non-factor in Philadelphia’s first couple of games this summer, Briscoe turned it on in his last outing in Utah. He finished with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting with two steals and two assists in only 12 minutes of action.

Alex Poythress and Aaron Harrison each saw limited action; Poythress tweaked a hamstring.

See some of the highlights and a lengthier recap here.

5. Meanwhile, back in Lexington…

The guys not in Egypt are getting ready for the season.

It’ll be October before we know it.

6. Centre and Thomas More added to basketball schedule.

Kentucky will take on Thomas More on Friday, Oct. 27 and Centre on Friday, Nov. 3. Both games will be preseason exhibitions, marking the first time either school will travel to Rupp Arena to play the Cats. Times and TV designations are TBD.

7. Should we live blog the USA-Germany game today?

The thought just crossed my mind. I’ll leave it up to you.

8. Early Southern Miss football scouting:

I would totally buy this guy’s album.

9. Buffett at Riverbend tomorrow.

Tailgate starts at 6 am. Be there.

(Mo Egger, you’re not invited.)

10. Laura Rutledge is today’s KSR guest host.

Tune in to today’s show to hear Laura Rutledge, the SEC Network sideline reporter extraordinaire and new host of SEC Nation. You may also remember her from the awkward interview with John Calipari in front of the Mizzou student section, which I’m sure she will address. Give Laura two hours of your time today and maybe give her a call, too.

Today is Steve Romines and TJ Smith, not Laura Rutledge. Still, you know the drill.

I would give Laura Rutledge 2 hours of my time every day. And 4 on Sunday.

  2. Kudos to that UT fan for having a sense of humor! The UK fans too. Great pic!
