UK Hoops kicked off the season tonight with an 82-66 victory over #14 Miami, here are four takeaways from the game to set the tone for the rest of the season:

Taylor Murray is fast

The freshman point guard controlled the court. Literally, just watching her run from my seat made me tired. Her shining moment came at the end of the game when she sunk a dagger three with two minutes left. Murray had 8 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and played 26 minutes.

They can play small

In the second period with Rice out with a dislocated finger and Akhator needing a rest, Mitchell switched it up. Mackenzie Cann who is 5’9 played center and Epps was at the four. Surprisingly, this worked for the cats. Akhator sat the bench the whole third period, Rice went in and out but the cats scored an additional 19 points using the “playing small” strategy.

Makayla Epps is DEFINITELY the leader

Despite a little limp and an off night of free throw shooting, it’s clear this is Epps’ team. She was calling plays and taking charge all night. She’s not just the leader of the team but the leader of the fan base as well. When Epps did well, the team played with more pep and the crowd was more electric. Epps had 29 points, 3 rebounds, and 5 assists.

The crowd loves this team

Though the men’s team was playing just down the street, the environment in Memorial was electric. Especially in the last five minutes as things got close.  Don’t sleep on this team ya’ll – they’re fun, and they’re fast. UK Hoops take on Albany tomorrow night in Memorial at 7pm. Get in here.
