One of the top-ranked guards in the 2019 class is back on the market after parting ways with Duke on Thursday.
Boogie Ellis, the sixth-ranked combo guard in the 247 Composite Rankings, was granted a release from his Letter of Intent to play for the Blue Devils. Ellis was the first to commit to Duke’s No. 1 class back in November, but for whatever reason, had a change of heart this spring. There is some early speculation that the return of Tre Jones and the addition of Cassius Stanley, another shooting guard, may have pushed him away.
Memphis will be one of the first schools to contact Ellis, if it hasn’t already. Memphis was a finalist for Ellis the first time around and Penny Hardaway will be involved once again in Round 2 of Ellis’ recruitment.
The question for us here in Kentucky is, what does this mean for RJ Hampton?
If Memphis goes after Ellis, it may mean Hardaway isn’t confident in landing Hampton. That would be good news. But with a new spot open at Duke, do we worry Hampton may reconsider? He cut Duke from his list earlier this week.
There are a lot of ways this can play out and some of them can affect Kentucky’s shot at Hampton. I doubt there will be much interest between Kentucky and Ellis.
